I have just bought a new CD/DVD writer for my (6-year old) Dell - the old drive gave up the ghost months ago. When I put in a CD-ROM after boot up it reads the top level directory, but says (incorrectly) that all the folders are empty. After that, it keeps the same displayed contents whatever disc I then put in the drive.
It will not recongnise audio CDs or DVDs at all. The drive is a Sony NEC Optiarc DVD RW AD-7201A I have updated all my drivers with latest versions (using DriverMax), and removed the Upper and Lower filters in the registry. I've uninstalled all the CD writing software I can find. I've uninstalled the CD/DVD driver and allowed it to reinstall itself. The CDs are all readable on another machine, but I cannot check the drive itself on another machine. Am I flogging a dead horse trying to get a brand-new DVD writer to work on such an old machine - or is there something I've missed. I would be grateful for any suggestions at all. |
