I purchased my Samsung SH-S182D DVD/RW back in November 2006 and It's worked exceptionally on both Vista and XP. I've been using Vista for the past year and I decided to format the other day as I had too much crap clogging up my system, however after I formatted Vista started to hate my DVD/RW.
I know that my optical drive works fine as it boots from BIOS fine and also works before I install any of the recommended Windows updates and my basic drivers (chipset, audio, video, mouse and keyboard). After I install all of my drivers and updates and reboot the problems begin, whenever I try and load a DVD the green progress bar in Windows explorer will climb up to maximum then eject the tray and tell me to put a disc in as it is unable to detect anything. I've been lurking around Google results for anything related to my drive itself and similar problems with Vista with other drives and the registry fix I found doesn't work as there is no UpperFilter or LowerFilter in the said key as It's a fresh format without any burning software installed. I've tried manually reinstalling all the ATA Channel drivers from the device manager except the one that uses Ultra DMA Mode 5 for my HDD and I've updated the firmware from SB02 to the latest SB07 from mid 2008. Nothing I've tried has returned any results and I can't understand for the life of me why this problem has never occured before on my previous Vista installations. I'm probably going to just buy the newer SATA version of this optical drive but I shouldn't really have to as this one works fine and It's probably just Windows update like a whole bunch of people pointed out in the various Google results I was looking at. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. Last edited by dayvh; 10-03-2008 at 07:36 AM. |

Re: DVD/RW problems with Vista (Samsung SH-S182D DVD/RW)
Luckily managed to find a brand new spare IDE cable lying around but still no luck. Marvell Boot ROM detects it perfectly fine and can still boot from it aswell but Vista still doesn't show it any love :(
I get the CD loading cursor for a few seconds and the drive spins up then nothing happens and it does it again and after several times it just doesn't do anything. I was also wondering if the driver details on properties of the optical drive is supposed to display cdrom.sys as the installed driver. Thanks for trying Dai. Re: DVD/RW problems with Vista (Samsung SH-S182D DVD/RW)
can you try the drive in another computer to see if the actual drive is the problem

Re: DVD/RW problems with Vista (Samsung SH-S182D DVD/RW)
I don't have another computer to try it in but considering I can boot from it before I enter windows and do a full format with it I doubt It's actually the drive. As I also previously said it works fine before I install any drivers or windows updates.
There's quite alot of people with similar problems on Vista SP1 and XP but about 90% of them fixed it with the removal of the UpperFilter and LowerFilter entries in the registry key that Microsoft specify in their knowledgebase. I don't seem to have either of the entries though, but the problem for them was burning software like Roxio and Nero removing their drives when I've never encountered any such problems with the software nor have I had it installed in my last three formats. Re: DVD/RW problems with Vista (Samsung SH-S182D DVD/RW)
I couldn't quite get the devcon to work, after executing it from cmd in It's directory it runs fine but just closes too quick. I don't believe the registry actually contains the filters for the specific optical drive key unless you install any burning software or media players with burning capability though. The only form of burning I have at the moment is Media Player 11 and I haven't actually tried to do anything with it.
I'm probably just gonna bag a new Samsung SH-S223F/RSMN for £21 as I'm not exactly fond of the extra half a minute the P5Q takes to boot up from having to run the Marvell Boot ROM to detect the optical drive via IDE. Last edited by dayvh; 10-06-2008 at 01:57 AM. |
