Unable to burn files?

I use Ashampoo Burning Studio 8 for burning, and now I apparently cannot burn large files. Basically my computer died on my a few weeks back, turned out to to be the CPU had cooked, so I replaced it. While I was at it I upgraded from 2gb to 4gb of RAM (DDR2 800). Apart from that my system is identical to what it was prior to my CPU cooking, and before that happened I was able to burn transcoded movies fine using Burning Studio.

Normally when I want to stick a movie I have or whatever on DVD I just use Burning Studio's Make DVD option, select the avi/mpg/whatever file, and some other options and go from there. It asks for a disc, I put the disc in, it checks the disc, says everything is fine. I click next, it take however long to transcode the movie and when it is finished doing that it should burn to disc, but this is where it has now started to fail. I only noticed this the other week since I hadn't needed to burn anything for a while.

I'll also mention that it takes absolutely friggin' ages to recognise discs. When you start the process of burning it asks for a disc so I stick one in unless one is in there already, then it takes upwards of ten minutes before anything happens. The program just freezes. Same thing happens when I go to erase a disc with the program. Eventually though it unfreezes and begins working normally again. All the time the app is frozen there is no drive activity either so I dunno what the hell it is doing the whole time. This never used to happen either.

Anyway Burning Studio isn't too good with giving proper error codes or messages when problems occur, but I dug this out of the log that it hides away in the documents and settings folder, apparently these are the errors I'm getting;

SCSI_ERROR from [1:0]: ILLEGAL REQUEST - INVALID FIELD IN CDB(5:24/00)

SCSI_ERROR from [1:0]: ILLEGAL REQUEST - INVALID FIELD IN CDB(5:24/00)

SCSI_ERROR from [1:0]: UNKNOWN RESPONSE Dump: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

Though it is obviously complaining about SCSI - my drive is an IDE drive, connected via IDE cables. Not sure if that is a fluke or what.

I've tried everything under the sun to try and resolve the problem but nothing seems to help. From trying different media, to burning simple files to disc, to reinstalling the whole system software. I also read some places that nvidia chipset drivers can cause burn problems but I tried uninstalling them and it didn't make a blind bit of difference, nor did reinstalling the most recent drivers. All that works is if I burn files to a disc. If I try and burn these transcoded movies it fails. I even used the option to save the transcoded movie to a disc image prior to burning, it saved the image okay but burning failed as expected. However I got the image from the temp folder and I tried burning it using the "Burn image to disc" option. But that failed too. So I tried just burning the image as just a file onto the disc instead, which also failed. It doesn't make any sense.

I also tried transcoding a small movie I had (about 12 mb), but again the burn process failed. And yea, first priority was to contact Ashampoo but after being ignored for a week they finally got back to me telling me to send them the error report. Which I'd already done but I did it again anyway. Not heard from them since - I figured if I posted here I might get somewhere a bit quicker since they don't seem all that interested.

Anyway to recap;
*Transcodes movies okay but burning fails
*Transcodes okay, saves project as a disc image okay, burn still fails
*Burning the disc image separately to disc fails
*Burning the disc image as just a file to disc fails
*Burning any other file to disc fails
