Unable To Burn DVD's or CD's, System Becomes Unresponsive Part Way Through Burn

I am currently unable to consistently burn any CD's or DVD's to my computer.

Basically what happens is I load up my burning software of choice (using IMGBurn at the moment, although have tested with others) and start burning my disk. Somewhere, randomly during the progress of burning (very, very rarley the disk will actually burn fully) my computer becomes unresponsive and the burn rate on the disk becomes 0 (as in no data is burned at all). While this happens my DVD burner is still operating at full speed and my computer becomes unresponsive (I am unable to open to programs, but programs that are already open seem to work, IE if I have a web browser open I can still surf the web). I am also unable to to close the burning program, or shut down my computer by any other method than a hard shut down.

I am inclined to believe that this may be a software error as I just reformatted my PC today to try and fix this. After installing only my video and chipset drivers as well as my burning software I was able to successfully burn 1 disk (I did not try any more). Now that I have finished installing the rest of my drivers and software (including Alcohol 52%, DVD Shrink, AutoGK, DVD Decrypter, and basically all the normal software I put on my PC except for my games) I was unable to burn the same disk (I got to 81% before I decided I would test to see if the problem was really fixed so started opening/closing various programs - started doing this at like 50%).

I have had this problem for months, it started after I reformated my PC. Since than I have replaced my DVD burner, RAM, switched SATA cables and which port I plug the cable into my motherboard.

*Event viewer shows no events at all when this error happens.
*To the best of my knowledge the hardware is stable (need to test my RAM further though).

I am using:
*ASUS P5K Premium
*Intel e6750 at 3.6GHz
*Mushking Ascent 1000 at DDR2-1080 5-5-5-15 (I want to test my RAM more as I think this could be the problem as well, I have only let it Memtest loop twice as I use my PC heavily for work at university)
*Pioneer DVR-216DBK (also happened with a DVR-212DBK)
*Seagate 7200.10 320GB x2 in RAID0 for OS and same HDD's in RAID1 for data storage
*XP Pro SP3

Thanks for any and all help!

Was burning working prior to XP SP3? I would try rolling back to just SP2 to see if this corrects the problem. Also, are their newer SP3 drivers out for your burner?

Re: Unable To Burn DVD's or CD's, System Becomes Unresponsive Part Way Through Burn

I slipstreamed SP3 right onto my disk and reformatted my machine, to the best of my knowledge I can't roll back to SP2 as my particular install has never had SP2 on it. As I said, I just reformatted today.

I have used the same disk for a while now and it is only within the lasts few reformats that I have been having problems, which kind of leads me to believe that either some piece of hardware has become defective or some software I am putting onto my machine is screwing up the process; I did burn that one disk before installing all my other crap after all. I mean, I could probably reformat and burn a couple of disks in a row while doing other stuff to make sure that the system is fine right off the disk, but that is a lot of disks (considering after I finish that I would need to do the same tests after each piece of software I install).

I tried updating the firmware for my burner(s), but that was no help.

Any possible way you can do a print screen of your Add/Remove programs?

I'm assuming you're using ImgBurn to burn discs. Try using www.deepburner.com

I get the same results if I burn through Nero (not installed at the moment though), DVD shrink, nLite (when making new XP disks), or any other program I have tried. I will give Deep Burner a try though.

While the free version of the software is kind of useless to me, it still has the same problem as my other burners.

Have you tried uninstalling the writer from device manager and allowing windows to find it again?

Re: Unable To Burn DVD's or CD's, System Becomes Unresponsive Part Way Through Burn

When I have some free time I will try that, as well as uninstalling all of my various burning softwares except for 1 that has worked for me for years (DVD Shrink). If that doesn't work I will do a reformat and work from there.

I don't have much time as a student, need my computer for a lot of stuff :(

Oh trust me, I know. I work full time & attend college full time.

Also as dai suggested, what wattage/brand psu do you have?
Have you added any new hardware since the last time it was working?
