A USB-2 port stopped recognising my USB-disk as USB-2

For some reason it started telling me "this device can work faster". It did not do that yesterday....
Well, not only my USB, Also my Card reader and any other USB-2 device.
The port next to it is working just fine.
I tried reinstalling the chipset for my mother board - did not help.
Any Idea?
Thanks,
Dani

Re: A USB-2 port stopped recognising my USB-disk as USB-2

Delete all your USB root hubs from device manager and then reboot. Windows will re-create them the next time you login. Wait for all that to happen, and then try again. Sometimes they get corrupt, especially f people don't do "safely remove hardware..." each time, and there is no way to really tell which USB hub is bad. I've had to do this dozens of times for problems like that, not seeing a device it saw yesterday, causing a ! in device manager for something it just used yesterday, etc. Generally fixes the problem without the hour spent in the registry.

Alternately, you might try a System Restore point form yesterday if you have one, but that doesn't always fix a hardware driver that is hosed... Let us know how it goes!

Do any of the USB ports on your computer work? Also, what is the make and model of your computer?

Re: A USB-2 port stopped recognising my USB-disk as USB-2

All 5 other USB ports work fine.
Motherboard - ASUSTeK Model M2N-MX SE
Chipset NVIDIA MCP61 (downloaded and installed the latest version)
Southbridge NVIDIA MCP61
LPCIO ITE IT8712
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc., Version 0308 Date 07/10/2007
Do you need more info? if so, can you tell me which?

Re: A USB-2 port stopped recognising my USB-disk as USB-2

Well, it's not uncommon for a USB port to go bad. I've seen it before, most often on laptops because they get more use/abuse. I'm not saying that you abused yours at all, but rather the whole thing is connected to your mobo by tiny solder points and a prayer :)

I would just write off that single port and use the other ones. If you need more USB slots, go spend around 20 bucks and get you a USB 2.0 mini-hub. I love mine! Just check the specs and make sure it has a long enough cord to reach around behind your pc; some DO NOT! I have one I got a trade-show for free that has a one inch cord. I'm going to assume it is made for laptops! Even still, it's a tad short. Mine actually has a way longer cord than I needed, but it's from France so maybe it because of the Metric System :)

One more thing.. You didn't say if the bad port was on the front or the back of your machine. I assumed it was one of the back ones since you said you have 6. That board (M2N-MX SE) does have support for 8 USB 2.0 connectors, 6 on the mobo in back and 2 for front panel with proper case/cable.

If for some reason it is one of the ones on the front connected with the cable to your mobo, then you might try reseating that cable. Again, I don't think that is your issue, since you only speak of 6, but just thought I'd mention it just in case.

Either way you've got a lot of USB. I HAD to get a hub because I had to replace the mobo that came with this rig, so I lost the 2 front ones right off since the proprietary cable would not work. That left me with only 4 in the rear, which is a pain to get to (if you knew my cramped setup), for Printer, card-reader, External USB drive so I really only had 1 port and I use my USB thumb drive a LOT, so this expansion hub was well worth it. It's a Connectland UH-102 and I got it at newegg. I have no idea if they still have them. It looks weird, but it works great!

Re: A USB-2 port stopped recognising my USB-disk as USB-2

Just pitching in: check in your BIOS if legacy USB support is enabled. That might revert all the USB ports back to 1.1
If you had an Asus motherboard with Award BIOS, it might be under Integrated Peripherals. You'd have a choice like USB controller: [1.1] or [1.1 + 2.0] or [Disabled]. Pick the one that has 2.0 with it.
-- correction --
Apparently you have American Megatrends, so it might be a tad different.
