EEK! Hard Drive "Needs to be Formatted" Problem.

Hello I need some help, I have a HP Portable Hard Drive (150 Gigs)
It is the "Slide in Type" but I use it as an External drive thru a USB port.
I use it for downloads only. I was downloading about 100 Gigs in three
separate Files (Downloads) Now this problem I have has happened twice and lost wellover 100 Gigs of files. The drive is not "acting Up" no nasty sounds or anything. Out of nowhere, I turn on my computer and it "see's" the drive but it has a new lable, "Local Drive" (By the way It is not fat32 it is NTFS format) I try to access the "local drive" and it pops a message that it needs to be formatted. Is there anything I can do if this happens a Third time? I just don't want to keep losing ALL those files.By the way I am using Windows XP Home SP2--HP computer with Intel Motherboard. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
