cd-rewriter not working?

(win xp)
when I reboot the pc, there was a message that said "new hardware found, cd-rewriter". I checked the station, and I saw that the cd-rewriter station (supposed to be station (W:)) has suddenly another letter, (H:). Also, when I put a disc in the cd-rewriter, nothing happens, but after a while pc freezes and I have to reboot.
In the device manager, there is no yellow (!) where the cd-rewriter properties are stated, and it says "this device works correctly".

Re: cd-rewriter not working?

I uninstalled the drivers under "device manager", then reboot, and the "windows installed new hardware" message appeared. But nothing changed, the cd-writer still does not work. It seemed like It seems as if it keeps reading the disc. I put in an empty disc but the same thing happens. This problem occured suddenly, so it's not a new cd-writer I'm trying to install. It used to work ok.
