I am burning avi files back to DVD. I am burning on a Sony Double Layer/Dual Layer CD/DVD Burner & Reader. I been able to burn the AVI files to DVD & watch them perfectly for about a year. Then out of nowhere the DVD's either don't play, or they skip at random places in the movies & freeze (sometimes doesnt skip til the end of the movie, & never skips in the same places).
I am using VERBATUM disks, & same software I always have used. I later have tried other software & all of them make the DVD's skip except MAGIC DVD CONVERTER. If I burn a avi file using MAGIC DVD CONVERTER, that is the only software that doesnt make the DVD's skip. I've tried going back to the old software to confirm this, & its only this one program that will burn DVD's correctly. I have tried cleaning my DVD burner with a DVD CLEAN DISK you can buy from the store to see if it was dirty, but it doesn't help the cause. I have also tried doing DISK DEFRAGMENTER.. doesn't work.. Cleaned my computer for additional unneeded space, & I know I have plenty of RAM. Does anybody know how or why my DVD burner makes skipped DVD's all of a sudden? |

Re: Burned DVD's Skip All of A Sudden
Hi, the filters the drive & it's software use may have become corrupted or you may need to reinstall/update your codecs.
To clear the filters use this Download from Microsoft......... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/ Just download the Guided Help, run it and restart after completion. You may have to reinstall your burning software after this. For codecs, try this download........ http://www.afterdawn.com/software/vi...codec_pack.cfm |

Re: Burned DVD's Skip All of A Sudden
So I test tried burning DVD after doing the process and DVD's are still skipping. But now, even the one program that was burning them correctly is skipping like all the other ones. Do you have any other ideas or maybe different codec or something I can download?
Also, not sure if it makes a big difference but I'm running on XP Service Pack 2 (or possibly 3 since I did the windows update). |

Re: Burned DVD's Skip All of A Sudden
Hi, burning at a slower speed is usually recommended.
And you could also give your dvd drive a fresh start. Download this handy free utility, crap cleaner.... http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ Uninstall all burning software from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. Stay in Control Panel and move to System> Hardware> Device Manager and right-click on the name of the drive...........select Uninstall and restart. Press F8 during startup to enter Safe Mode, let windows load properly and run CCleaner to clean the drive and the registry. It's easy to use, but read the instructions first anyway. Restart, check that windows has installed and configured your dvd drive, run CCleaner again and then install just ONE burning application. Last edited by Houndog777; 08-07-2008 at 01:20 AM. Re: Burned DVD's Skip All of A Sudden
when i did the CCleaner & was in the install process I caught a bad virus which left me cleaning my PC a couple days before finishing the process. When I was done I was having picture problems on DVD's. But I went through and did the CCleaner again last night as directed above and it cleared up, but its back to just skipping and freezing the frame every few seconds.
