CRC problem with 2 different burners

Hi,

I'm having a big problem burning media for a couple of weeks now. Here is the full story:

I purchased a new DVD burner (ASUS DRW2014L1T) ago after my old LG rubber got cut.
I installed it, connected it to my SATA extension (the old one was on IDE).
After using it a couple of times, I started experiencing burn failures time & time again (DVD+R & Duals as well), most reffered with a "Cycling Redundancy Check" to certain files.
I uninstalled the Nero 7 I had and installed Nero 8 I recieved with the burner, along with Lightscribe ware hoping this was the problem. It wasn't.

After being told to try a different media and seeing it's not the problem, I contacted the store and had it replaced to a new one (same).
Installed the new one again, and got my hopes shattered again.

Finally, I decided to try the same content I was trying to burn on dual on a my friend's computer, to see maybe it's a physicall problem with my computer and it was burned successfully to my delight (confirming it's not a problem with the burner).
Although I have 2 SATA extensions on my motherboard (SATA ver. 1), one connected to HD, and the burner is suitable for SATA 1, there was seem to be a problem. We decided to switch burners temporarilly for now, until I upgrade my computer and I got his LG (Dual on IDE, no Lightscribe).
I've burned with the LG a couple of discs successfully over the weekend and to my suprise, recived the same CRC error yet again.

Some info i'll add:
*On the device manager, the IDE controllers, both Primaty IDE Channles are on DMA (first on Ultra DMA 5, the other is on Ultra DMA 2). No PIO's.

*On the BIOS, the first HD is master, second HD is slave, and DVD is secondary master.

*2x512 of RAM

*Both burners were connected alone to the free power cable (nothing on it besides the burner, to avoid transfer problems).

*Not sure if helpfull, but I upgraded my XP to XP PS2 (although it was a little before the first burner died so not sure if it's related in any way).

Would appreciate any help.

Thanks!

Re: CRC problem with 2 different burners

Hi, when you install and uninstall different drives and burning software, your Registry can get a little confused.
Try this solution from Microsoft......
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/

Use the Guided Help if uncomfortable using the Registry Editor.
You're also best to uninstall all burning software before doing this and reinstalling after it completes.

Re: CRC problem with 2 different burners

Shayguy,
Did you try deleting the Upper & Lower Filters as described in the Microsoft solution for drives that will not read DVD or CD media, and uninstall your burning software as I suggested in my response?
The wrong filters may be in use, or corrupted and that would lead to your current predicament.

Re: CRC problem with 2 different burners

check your psu is putting out a min of 18amps on the 12v+ line you may be getting a to big a draw when burning causing the crc errors
your hard drive temps are also high which can be bad air circulation or struggling for power

Any option I didn't cover? Will reinstalling XP / format can solve CRC errors?

Re: CRC problem with 2 different burners

It's ok I just remembered your HDD is SATA, so that rules that out.

Is there any connection between the files that are giving the errors? Same type, same download location?

Re: CRC problem with 2 different burners

I don't think it's the files, same type yes (all avi, different DL location), but after a bad burn or two, they get burned eventually (i'll also point that dual disc content that failed 5 times on my system, and went smooth on another pc with the new ASUS burner).

Will connecting the SATA cable to my second SATA extension will do?

Re: CRC problem with 2 different burners

I don't believe it's your cables or hardware. Rather the files themselves that are corrupted or the program used to read them has become corrupted.
If you have an XP disc handy, you could run System File Checker or, download a different media player and try to play a file that has already given you an error.

Re: CRC problem with 2 different burners

the crc errors pop up in Nero, which I switched 3 different versions already (tried the registery edit as well), and with Winrar and Total Commander when opening an archive. Playing videos and the ones that show errors are fine.

Re: CRC problem with 2 different burners

OK
"Drives that produce CRC errors frequently have difficultly reconciling the data received with the data transmitted. This can be for a variety or reasons such as poor cabling, hard disk microprogram corruption, or electronic related problems."

So, how about disk diagnostics.........

You're primary drive is an Hitachi, yes?
http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm

And the other a Maxtor..........
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/sup...oads/seatools/

Could also try moving one of the files that has already given you an error to your other hard drive and try to read it from there. See if it happens on both drives.
