Win Xp Pro - Svc Pack 2 - Hp Dvd 740
My HP DVD 740 will sometimes read/burn CD/DVD's and sometimes not. For the past couple of months I have not ben able to burn anything on my HP DVD740 at all. I've searched long and hard for a resolution and find that others have experienced my problem and like me can not fix it. Memory is not an issue and my PC runs clean. Windows can see the drive and device manager shows that there are no errors. Oddly, when I click on the drive in Windows the drive folder opens! Did I mention this is when the drive has NO disk inside. I would expect a message that says "Please insert disk". Swicthed from DMA to PIO and back. Uninstalled disk, reinstalled.. updated drivers, checked the cables.. All but remove the Nero software. I have read others removed Nero and that didnt fix the problem. Additional information could not be found on the HP website..
I'm looking for more than a simple answer of replacing the drive. I am determined to find out what the problem is. I have an older 8x HP drive that can read more disks than the newer HP drive..and it still burns like a champ. Looking for Got Skills. I have failed |

Try this from Microsoft.........
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/ Download the Guided Help and restart after completion. You may need to reinstall Nero after doing this. |

Re: Win Xp Pro - Svc Pack 2 - Hp Dvd 740
I went to MS and downloaded then ran the Guided Help. A CD played, I even ripped it. Stuck in a DVD, nothing. Stuck in the previous CD, nothing. So this evening I'll remove and reinstall the Nero Software. Searching my computer for Nero, I realized that I had an old version of Nero Media Player in addition to Nero 7. I downloaded Nero 8 and never installed it. (oops) ....I kept the old Media Player version anyway.. Don't know why as it stop playing music when I installed Nero7. Maybe that has something to do with the problem. The Media Player Version is: 1, 4, 0, 33. It has an awesome look and sound is superb (to me).

Re: Win Xp Pro - Svc Pack 2 - Hp Dvd 740
I've removed Nero and now use windows media player as the default. Would it help to uninstall the drive? Can I do this without having to physically remove the drive? If so, how? Remove the drivers?
Windows explorer continues to open that drive letter when a disk is not present. Why? |

Re: Win Xp Pro - Svc Pack 2 - Hp Dvd 740
Go into Control Panel> System> Hardware> Device Manager and right-click on the name of the drive. Select uninstall and restart.
(my Explorer also opens up E:/ with no disc installed, and I've a problem free system) |
