CD rom not recognised on IDE cable

Hi

I am building a pc from scratch, I have my IDE cable connected to the motherboard secondary primary slot. When the computer is turned on, power is supplied to cd drive but is not recognised on IDE. Do I have an IDE or Motherboard failure? Also on front of machine there is a stable red light and I am unable to access bios set up and it hangs on 'entering setup'.

Thanks

Re: CD rom not recognised on IDE cable

On the CDRom issue. How do you have it jumpered? What else is on that cable? Where do you have it located on that ribbon cable (middle or end). Does the computer turn on and run without the CDRom? What are your specs?

Re: CD rom not recognised on IDE cable

Hi
The cd rom is the only component on the ide cable at the moment...
I don't have the blue, black ide cable, the ide cables are light grey.

The cd rom is on the first connector on the ribbon.

For the moment I don't have the hard drive connected as I want to diagnose the cd rom issue first.

I have a nine in one card reader which shows two red lights on the front of the tower.

I also have one red light on the front but when the ide cable is taken out this light does not show.

The motherboard is the asus 8 n-sli.
Socket 939.
Processor 3500 + amd.
256 meg ram (just to get it running)

Thanks

Re: CD rom not recognised on IDE cable

If alone on the ribbon cable, set the jumpers to master and put that baby on the END connector of the ribbon cable. The light gray cable is an older 40 connector cable. Although CDRom's will sometimes work on a 40 connector cable, I would suggest you get an 80 connector cable and that might make it work for you. That way you are assured it is done correctly anyhow.

BTW, my spare computer is the same as yours (the a8n-sli deluxe board), except I have the San Diego 3700+ CPU. Nice little rig anyway and I like that board a lot.

Re: CD rom not recognised on IDE cable

When you changed it, did you make the hard drive master and on the END of the ribbon cable, and the CDRom as slave and in the middle connector????

With the hard drive on there, you must be using an 80 connector cable, no question about that one.

Re: CD rom not recognised on IDE cable

Do let us know, the 80 connector cable may be the key to this one. If not, then we will look at other issues.

Re: CD rom not recognised on IDE cable

another question, do you think there could be a problem with the bios or the motherboard?

reason i ask is that i have a raid card installed on the motherboard and that detects the HDD but not the cdrom drive using the same ide cables attached to the raid

Re: CD rom not recognised on IDE cable

Question - Do you have a raid array installed on this machine?

Re: CD rom not recognised on IDE cable

You need to use a ribbon cable that has (connectors) Blue to the motherboard, gray to the middle connector, and black on the end connector. You need to have a cable like that with no substitutions for it to work correctly.

Yes, do you have an array (2 or more drives) hooked up in Raid configuration? If you don't, take that card out of there since it serves no purpose.

Re: CD rom not recognised on IDE cable

so if the ide cables dont work will it be a case of a problem with my motherboard ide slots?

Re: CD rom not recognised on IDE cable

Too early to tell. Do you have the hard drive area set to "Auto" in the bios?

Re: CD rom not recognised on IDE cable

both the cdrom and hard drive is set to auto, as mentioned though the raid card does recognise the hard drive so i know theres no problem there using normal ide cables, i just dont want to go out and buy a new board sio looking for alternatives if the motherboard ide slots are buggered

Re: CD rom not recognised on IDE cable

If you have the hard drive on an aftrmarket raid card (I still don't understand why you have it hooked this way) and it recognizes it, then you need to have the CDRom (if alone on the ribbon cable) set to Master on the Primary IDE and be placed on the end of the ribbon cable. Have you done this yet. In addition, if you have a decent raid card (capable of raid), then you should also be able to hook other IDE devices on there. Have you tried that?

Re: CD rom not recognised on IDE cable

the raid card is probably about 6 months old and purchased from a retailer, the cdrom has always been set to master and placed in the primary ide slot and on the end connector but still the bios dont pick it up.

i have tried the cdrom on the raid card but it doesnt pick it up, i forgot to mention that at one point the cdrom did actually load up a xp disc but i didnt have a hard drive avaliable so hence it could not install, and also the cdrom still did not show on the bios menu.

is there a way to get the cdrom working on the raid card then?
