External harddrive is wonkey

I have an external harddrive that shows up in my computer, but It wont read. When I try and format it, it goes to 100% and then it tells me the format failed. I go to properties on the drive, and it tells me the file system is RAW, and it has 0 bytes free and 0 bytes total. I am using a dell latitude d505. Any suggestions?

Hi

What's the make/model of the HDD?

See if you can format the drive with Parted Magic.

Only keep copies of important data on the drive until you're sure it can be trusted.

It is a maxtor 5000XT 250 GB. I will try formatting it with that program, and come back with the results
