problem with driver

I have problem with driver after format the computer, so I'm not sure if my driver is broken or what?

It seems to work fine if I put in DVD, but it doesn't work when CDs are inserted. The driver detail is: NEC DVD+-RW ND-6650A. I use window xp with a dell computer. I tried to download new driver (software?) from dell support and other websites, but that still doesn't work.

Please help me.

Re: problem with driver

Hi noonbutterfly and welcome to TSF

If you think the problem is with a driver, go to Device Manager and see if there are any yellow or red marks on the tree. If there is, right click on the yellow marked device and pick update drivers. Let it go on line and find the latest one. If it can't find a better driver, just un-install the device and reboot letting windows reassign a drive to the device. Sometimes that clears up the problem.

I should point out that each motherboard comes with a set of drivers that aren't normally included on the windows install disk. If you have such a disc/CD, use it to install the needed drivers. Normally they include Audio and a few others. However, you should have yellow marks by each needed device needing drivers in the Device Manager.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Mack1

Re: problem with driver

Thank you Mack1 for helping, but the problem is still there. There is no yellow or red mark around the area of the dvd or cd drive, but there is a yellow question mark on "Other Devices." So I uninstall the driver and reboot the computer, but it still find the same driver, nec dvd+-rw ND-6650A, for me. So then I tried "update driver." The result came out to be that there is no other driver better than this one.

I tried the CD that included. It's for reinstalling cyberlink powerDVD 5.5 software; I don't know if it's related, and it doesn't run. I also put in operating system dvd. It ran, but nothing happen to both the computer and the driver.

so now, I'm not sure what's the problem is.

Re: problem with driver

Hi noonbutterfly,

I was going to suggest removing the upper and lower filters next. Is that what you did?
Look in your registery again and make sure. That usually works.

Also, try the drivers from the CD. Try update driver and pick the "let me pick the driver" and navigate to the CD. It might be that it can't see the drive either with the present driver. You may have to put the CD on another computer and copy the drivers to a usb stick memory or external drive, or floppy if you have a floppy drive.

Using your model number, find and download the motherboard driver set from Dell. That should also clearup the unknown devices error marks in the device manager.

Hope this helps,
Mack1
