Re: dvd-rom plz help

Windows supports all ATAPI IDE DVD-ROM devices with its internal 32-bit Driver (i.e. the drive is plug and play). If your drive is able to play an audio CD or explore the contents of a data CD through Windows Explorer, then the driver has been installed properly by Windows.

The playing of DVD movies is controlled by the MPEG 2 decoders and not by the drive. Hitachi does not make or sell decoders. Hitachi's drives are compatible with decoders from several different companies including InterVideo and Sigma Designs. If what you need to play movies is not there, you will need to contact the company you purchased the drive from. If you have recently upgraded your OS, visit the decoder software's website and download the latest upgrade/patch for the decoder software.

Purchase software players by selecting one of the following links:

* WinDVD, from InterVideo
* PowerDVD from Cyberlink

For information on MS Windows XP DVD decoder support, please visit Microsoft’s website.

does this mean i require dvd decoder software to be installed to read any dvd whatsoever or just movies... : \
