Lightscribe Problem

Hi guys,
I'm having trouble with my HP dvd1040 lightscribe drive. It burnt 1 dvd fine but now it will get halfway then a communications error appears saying to reboot and try again. Keeps happening every time now though. I tried updateding firmware and LSS but no change. Think it could be registry accidentally got deleted for dvd/cd device but tried to restore it but now in my devices tab the dvd player comes up as unknown device. Still reads and writes fine tho. Really dont want to have to reinstall XP but im stumped. Any ideas how i can check if registry is as it should be?

uninstall it from the device manager and reboot
