dvd drive

I recently began building a new computer (first time building my own) and ran in to 2 issues when i turned it on.

#1 dvd drive wont open. through about 2 hours of changing connections and cables, i descovered that if the power supply is plugged in, but no connection to the motherboard (IDE) is made, the drive will open and close fine. but theres no data transfer without it being plugged into the motherboard (obvious?)

#2 there is no display. I have tried several cables and moniters, cant get a display. my thought is that i have no drivers for my video card, and so it wont work yet. but theres no other way to plug in the display. unless i can find a serial port cable that can plug into my moniter(no such luck so far)

any suggestions? thank you

Re: dvd drive

Hi, what motherboard, cpu, memory, video and power supply are you using?
Do all the fans spin when you power-on?
