External Hard Drive Problem

Hello,

I'm new here, but seeking some advice as to why my western digital hard drive has suddenly stopped working.
I have a laptop running windows xp service pack 3, its about 2 years old.
My hard drive is a western digital model number WD2500C035 160GB.
It has worked perfectly for over a year but last week my computer crashed whilist the drive was connected via the USB and now every time I plug it in the laptop will not recognise it.
The drive still switches on ok and makes all the usual noises internally, but the drive does not "autoplay" when switched on.
Its drive letter is Z but when I click on my computer its no longer there.
I've tried it in another laptop (a newer one) but all it does is crash the computer to which you try to connect it to.
The hard drive only really contains all my itunes music, which is now quite annoying because i can't update my itunes library.
Really don't want to lose all this data, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Nick.

Re: External Hard Drive Problem

Hello

I'm not familiar with disk management but I have managed to access it.
Yes it's present in disk management and says that the status is "healthy".

I right clicked the drive and selected "explore" but the following error occured:

Z:\ is not accessible.
The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

What does this mean?

Also I have tried replacing the USB cable but unfortunately it's not a part that i can seem to get hold of.
