DVD-R Drive not Reading Certain Discs

Hello all,

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. Yesterday I started experiencing some odd behavior on my Dell Inspiron 9400 Laptop. This PC is running Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) and I have not had any issues until now.

I first began having issues reading CD's on my Pioneer DVD-R drive. Specifically, I was trying to install Diablo 2 and the X-pac, it would struggle to read the disc at all (it would try for a good minute). So, cleaned it, etc, etc, it looked fine. Tried it on GF's computer booted up fine. Even all of the other Diablo 2 CD's didn't work on mine, but worked on hers. I did test a DVD (Batman Begins , and that seemed to work). Then I tried a Windows XP Disc and it did not read that. In fact, when I clicked on my D:\ drive, it loaded up Batman Begins DVD. Of course it didn't play it because it wasn't in there, but it did this with Diablo as well, . I also use MagicDisc, which is a virtual CD-drive emulator, and that would also not recognize any of those discs. I have a virtual machine running Windows XP pro and that had zero problems reading these discs as well (using MagicDisc).

I searched for drivers for the Pioneer drive (DVD+-RW DR-K17Y) and I did not see any updates, I uninstalled them and reinstalled the same ones, that didn't do anything though. Anyone have any ideas for this issue?

Thank you, please help!

Re: DVD-R Drive not Reading Certain Discs

Testing it some more......it seems it will read DVD's, but NOT CD's. I understand they have separate lasers to read them?
