problem burning to CDs and DVDs

I have a Dell Dimension 8300 Intel P 4 3.0GHz with HT technology. When I insert a new blank CD-R or DVD-R, it instantly comes up as 0 bytes available space. I have a DVD+RW/+R with CDRW Combo drive with DVD Decoder software. I have previously successfully recorded to a CD-R 700MB 1x-24x compatible disc. However sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I have viewed the comments on the difference between -R and +R at the following link: http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/2279. Could this be creating the problem? I don't understand the inconsistencies. btw have had NO success archiving my photos to the DVD-R. Help?!
