Cheap card reader

I have bought a very cheap SD card reader (£1) for transferring photos from a digital camera to a laptop. It works fine but would photos be transferred across at a higher quality if I had bought a more expensive card reader, or, as it is a digital file, is it all or nothing?

No. The quality of the reader does not affect the quality of the images. For better quality images, you need a better camera.
