CD Burning Issues & Slow Computer...Please Help!

I am having a problem with my computer, it is running kind of slow in general, but in particular, when I try to burn a CD I get a message that the speed of the burn is too fast. I tried doing it on the slowest possible setting and had the same thing occur. This has never happened before and I have burned CD's for ever.

I have done all of the normal things that a person does to speed up their computer (all of the things recommended on this site) with no results and apparently there isn't a malware problem.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Re: CD Burning Issues & Slow Computer...Please Help!

lost_grrl,

You mentioned that your PC is running slow. Does it take forever to start up? If you have audio hardware and try to play CDs or MP3 file, does the audio distort, skip or "stutter"?

If so, try this:

- Right click on My Computer > Properties > Hardware Tab > Device Manager

- Extend the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers group

- Right click on Primary IDE and hit Uninstall

- Reboot the computer, the Primary IDE drivers will re-install themselves after you reboot.

- Go back to the Device Manager and extend the same group again.

- Right click on Primary IDE Channel and go to Properties > Advanced Settings tab.

- Make sure that both Device's Modes are on "DMA if available".

Reboot and see if you still have the problem. If not, reply back here and we'll try something else.

- John

Re: CD Burning Issues & Slow Computer...Please Help!

That uninstalling thing was not a good idea. The computer wouldn't restart at all until I intervened and "F8'ed" it to restore to the last safe start point...it kept cycling to restart and then a blue screen would flash too fast to read what was on it, and then it was back to off and would restart again.

The issue isn't really audio skipping anyhow. The main problem is that when I try to burn a disc I get a message that it is burning at too fast of a speed, and to try a slower speed. Then even at the slowest speed, that message appears.

Re: CD Burning Issues & Slow Computer...Please Help!

lost_grrl,

Sorry if my first advice messed things up. It shouldn't have. Normally, when you remove those devices, windows boots up, detects the hardware and reinstalls the drivers. Perhaps you have a non-standard IDE controller or some unusual configuration.

As far as the burning problem. What software are you burning with? What is the make/model of your burner (CDR/DVDR drive)? Are you using different blank media than you normally use? I ask because media is rated by speed so the rated speed of your blank media needs to be compatible with the drive's write speed capabilities.

Re: CD Burning Issues & Slow Computer...Please Help!

We fixed the problem. although I am not quite sure which fix it was that solved it. We didn't try to burn after each thing, but waited until we did a few things. We had an issue with the virtual memory a week ago, and the computer said that it was fixing it, but it wasn't restored to the previous amount. So we did that and added some more RAM, plus a few other basic things, and all seems to be resolved.
