Hello and thanks in advance for your time and replies,
i recently bought a generic 32 in 1 internal card reader, one of those you plug into the internal usb ports of the board, it comes with a single usb 2.0 port besides the card readers, and has 2 green lights that are always on (as long as its hooked) and turn to red whenever theres a card inside i first tried it on my old pc, a pentium 4 1.8ghz with old intel board and windows xp sp2, didnt set anything on the bios, and as soon as i turned the pc on, the green lights turned red for a second, and it booted normally and everything worked. My pc showed the 4 extra drives as F: G: H: and I:, i tried the usb port and it worked, tried the card reader and it recognized an old mmc i had perfectly, and when i tried the "safely remove hardware" it showed them as avex ax1611 so i asume thats the brand, or at least it recognized it as such. I then procceeded to install it on my new pc, board EX38-DS4 with F3 revision BIOS, and Windows XP SP3, as soon as i turned it on i noticed The green lights never turned red, once it booted it showed the new hardware found msg, but it didnt recognize it as a media card reader, it did however install it, but as an "Unknown device", the extra drives dont show up on my pc, and under device manager there doesnt seem to be an error, theres absolutely no exclamation mark next to any device, its perfectly installed as an "unkwnon device", i tried downloading some drivers for it and it wouldnt change a thing, and when trying to update the drivers for it through device manager, it wouldnt install them, i found and tried the setup for avex ax1611 wich didnt work either. The usb port does work. i tried checking the bios and every usb option is enabled, tried hooking it to another internal usb port to no avail, it just wont work on this pc. what can i do that doesnt involve taking back windows to sp2? i think theres a slight chance that might not be it, since like i said it seems odd that as soon as i started the old pc, the green lights would turn red, indiciating it tried to read a card on it, wich wont happen on the new one, so it doesnt recognize it from the startup sorry about the long post but i tried to make it as clearer as i could and point out everything i know about it, thanks in advance again |

Re: Media card reader works on one pc wont on the other
Thanks for the reply,
this are the only pnp options on my bios under PnP/PCI configurations menu Resources controlled by : [Auto] Manual (if i choose manual i get to set IRQ 3- 15) PCI latency timer [32] 64 128 PCI 1 IRQ assignment [Auto] 3 4 5 ... 15 PCI 2 IRQ assignement [Auto] 3 4 5 ... 15 I cant seem to find any pnp enable/disable option, or anything that mentions pnp outside that menu, and those are all including hidden options after pressing ctrl+F1 gigabyte board EX38-DS4, award bios P.d under Integrated peripherals menu, i have USB controller, USB 2.0 controller, USB keyboard support, USB mouse support, and legacy USB storage detect, all enabled, and the usb port on the media card reader does work but it wont be recognized as a a media card reader, simply unkwnon device Last edited by CoL2k3; 05-23-2008 at 01:48 PM. |

Re: Media card reader works on one pc wont on the other
i assume pnp is auto enabled and they have discarded the setting
try a cmos reset then reoptimise the bios

Re: Media card reader works on one pc wont on the other
dont know if its auto enabled, on the bios features it says
2x8 Mbit flash Use of licensed award bios support for dual BIOS PnP 1.0a, DMI 2.0, SM BIOS 2.4, ACPI 1.9b i tried cmos reset via screwdriver on the jumper (followed the manual), it did reset bios and all settings, and it didnt work either, the card reader works only as an extra usb port, but the card reader drives dont show up on xp. I tried it on my old pc again to see if it had been damaged or something from all the plugging and unplugging, but it keeps working on the old one, just not on this. as a side note, media card reader has a light (always green) that turns red when a card is inside, as soon as bios POST on my old pc with the media card installed, the light turns red, on the new pc it never does, its like it doesnt even know it exists, not even after cmos reset |

Re: Media card reader works on one pc wont on the other
i thought that you couldnt have both HDD SMART and NCQ working at the same time, thats why i disabeld it.
so did you see anything that i should change about my bios settings in order to get my media card reader to work just like it does on my old 2001 pc :(? |

like i said earlier tho, i do not think it is a software based problem, since i have dual boot vista and xp, and vista doesnt recognize the card either, it shows it as an "unrecognized device" too, and only the usb port on it works. besides when i start the pc the card reader, the red light (indicating theres a card inside, wich would mean the pc recognizes the device as a card reader and not just an usb port) never turns on, it does on my old pc tho :( |

Re: Media card reader works on one pc wont on the other
nice ideas, i tried both, installed sp3 on old pc, and the card reader still worked on it :(, so its not sp3.
tried uninstalling all usb items, didnt work either. so before tossing the usb card reader to garbage i tried plugging it on the firewire internal port instead of the usb one, and it didnt like it very much... ended up buying another one and this one worked on both pc's right away, a weird thing occurred tho cause i tried it first on my new pc having nothing plugged but power cord, monitor and usb mouse/keyboard, and it worked, then i tried it on the old pc and it worked, then i hooked everything to the new pc leaving the card reader for last and by the time i logged it didnt show up on my pc, it didnt recognize it... i wanted to kick the goddamn thing, but i unplugged the card reader and also some external 4 in 1 usb hud, then plugged only the reader, started windows and this time it worked, added the hud and remained working. So, old one worked but only on some pc's, seems avex doesnt like either new boards or gigabyte boards, the new one works flawlessly. solved. thanks everyone for your help p.d the external 4 in 1 usb hud is not the cause for the old one not working simply because i tried it a gazillion times with nothing plugged but the keyboard and mouse and it just wouldnt work, but its worth noting that mass storage usb devices dont always like each other. |
