Angry CD-ROM - corruption errors

Hey Team

I've have a bit of a tricky problem on my hands, but i have no idea whats happening

Basically when error i try installing any applications from a CD-ROM i constantly recieve an error, especially games because there a much larger installation. The error appears as:
Error 1335. The cabinet file "example" required for the installation is corrupt and cannot be used. This could indicate a network error, an error reading from the CD-ROM, or a problem with this package

However you must cut the power to the CD-ROM, switch it back on and click the "retry button"
This temporarly corrects the problems, as bigger the application the more errors it has.
Have tried this on 3 separate CD-ROMS (2 x internal, 1 x external) and the same problem occurs, however all CD-ROMs are NEW

Does anyone have any ideas on whats causing the reading errors?

NOTE: im running a P4 670 (3.8Ghz), 3GB RAM, 512MB Card, 128MB Physix, 64MB Sound Card... None of them are Overclocked!

Re: CD-ROM - corruption errors

resp0nd,

Please reply with the exact make/model of your CD ROM drive(s), your PC or motherboard's made/model as well as the type of interfaces (internal & external) that you're trying to use.

When you all CD-ROMs are new, are you talking about the drives you're reading them with or the physical CDROM media? If it's the media, what is the title/version of the software you're trying to install?

Without knowing these facts, I can only guess that you've either got defective media or there's something wrong with the BIOS and/or drivers installed on your PC for the hard drive controllers you're attempting to access. Are these drives IDE, USB, Other?

Sorry reply with "20 questions", but know more specifics about your PC, Windows OS Version & service pack, CD/DVD ROM drives, interface types, etc. would mean the difference between the techs here guessing about your problem and being able to nail it down to a specific solution.

Re: CD-ROM - corruption errors

resp0nd,

I found the following on the MS KB website in relation to the specific Office install error you're experiencing:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/284250/en-us

The possible causes for this error are:

1. Install the version of the Windows Installer on the Office XP CD-ROM.
2. Log on as "Administrator" (Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 only).
3. Check for alternate installation locations.
4. Turn off and/or remove anti-virus software.
5. Test for a damaged CD-ROM or faulty CD-ROM drive

If you've removed or added drives since you originally installed Office 2003, this might be the issue as the Office install is looking on incorrect drive letters for the installation media. In this case, I would completely uninstall then reinstall Office 2003 from the new CD/DVD ROM drive on your system.

If you still have issues installing MS Office 2003, completely uninstall and reinstall using COMPLETE INSTALL option provided you have available space on your hard drive to do so.

Be sure that you're logged in as Administrator or an account with Administrator rights. If unsure, press CTRL-ALT-DEL on the login screen, type Administrator for the username and the appropriate Administrator password then install Office 2003 (or any OTHER programs from THIS account).

Let me know if any of these work. Also not that there are MANY Office 2003 upates/service packs which will need to be installed AFTER you've completed the install of Office 2003. To do this, go to http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/de...px?ofcresset=1 then click on the "Check for updates" button at the top.

Hope this helps.

- John

Re: CD-ROM - corruption errors

Hey Team

i tried the microsoft link and followed the instructions in trying to correct the problem, however the error is still occuring.
Through some investigating and reading MANY MANY forums, i discovered it could possible be a malufunctioning Southbridge / Northbridge.
I wasnt sure which bridge, but the one that controls the data processing for the CDROMS and USB external connections maybe overloading and premturely stopping the installing application (because it happens when you install from a CD or HDD now.
I had a similar problem a few years ago, i cant remember excatly but i ended up taking off extra CD-ROMS and HDD and only having 1 of each, to minimise the power draw from the motherboard, which corrected errors i experienced back then.

But still not sure? what do you think?

Re: CD-ROM - corruption errors

resp0nd,

Do you have the ability to test those CD ROMs on a different PC or motherboard? The USB one would be easy to test on a different PC or laptop. Are those IDE CD-ROMS cabled with 80-pin EIDE cables? How are those drives configured in your BIOS (i.e. transfer mode?)?

I doubt that ALL 3 drives are bad so I agree that there's something going on with either your motherboards hardware or drivers. Have you installed the Intel Chipset software on your PC?

http://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/...F_64(WHQL).zip

also check out the other drivers on Asus's site for vista:

http://support.asus.com/download/dow...Language=en-us

Try installing those Intel chipset drivers and see if this makes a difference.

Re: CD-ROM - corruption errors

Well still bad news unfortunatly. i have tried installing the lastest approved drivers & etc from the ASUS website, unfortunalty none of there "vista" compatiable software works. Just comes up as "software not supported on this OS" when they clearly say it is i have tried your link but it still wont install.
So i updated all my intel hardware from INTEL website and done the same for all my other hardware, updated to the lastest editions.
I've tried using the USB on my laptop and no problems at all, works like brand new
I have also tried the CD-ROMS on another similar board (actually the excat same model) coz i have 2x P5P800. It seems to be the same problem, when ever i reduce the HDDs from 2 to 1 and the same for CDROMs on a single motherboard it starts working. So i virtually have 1x HDD + 1x CDROM + 1x VIDEO Card and it works. However these motherbaords actually take upto 2 HDDS + 4 IDE CD-ROMS on a single motherbaord. Thats what i dont understand its a bit of a mystery

NOTE: all HDD are set as "AUTO" in transfer mode. I reset the motherboard BIOS to factory Default. (Doesnt help what i do)

Any ideas?

Re: CD-ROM - corruption errors

resp0nd,

Why type of IDE cables are you using for your CDROMs? Are your IDE CD ROM drives cabled and configured correctly (master, slave or CS if you have a Cable Select cable)? Are you using 80-pin EIDE cables - not the old 40-pin cables?

Go to:

http://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/...906_p5p800.pdf

Open this up (will take awhile - 4+MB PDF file), and jumpt to page 45 - scroll down and read about the IDE setup. Also look at page 47 as this gives info about compatibility between various BIOS settings and potential SATA/IDE device configurations depending on the version of Windows installed. Unfortunately - this is a "Pre-Vista" board - so the documentation don't talk about Vista issues.

AUTO transfer mode should work - but you need to use 80-pin EIDE cables on all of your IDE drives as those 40-pin cables will not support higher UDMA transfer speeds.

Read through pages 74 thru 76 in that manual I linked you to above. I'm thinking something might be configured incorrectly with these drive-related BIOS setings. Look at the PCI IDE Bus Master setting on page 87. If it's enabled - try to disable this setting and see if you have different results.

Try JUST connecting your 2 IDE CD ROM drives with NO hard drives and see if you can bring up the BIOS Setup and see if both drives are recognized. Try the same with just your two SATA hard drives (NO IDE devices).

dai brings up a good point - if the problems you're having aren't due to incorrect BIOS settings, drive jumpers or cables, this might be an issue with your PC power supply's ability to simultaneously provide adequate power to ALL of those drives. Trying just 2 CDROMS with NO hard drives and visa/versa should help you determine if there's a power supply capacity issue. If you BIOS is able to detect those drives in either configuration - you might have a power issue.

Lots of stuff to try and consider - but hopefully, this info will shed some light on the problems and limitations you're having with your motherboard and drives.
