[SOLVED] My Lite DVD drive will only recognise DVD R discs

I am having a very similar problem to SivaSeraphim but with a DH18A3P. Will only read/burn DVD R now but previously had no problems. (O/S Vista). I have checked that UDMA is enabled. Tried to contact Lite-on but no response. Please help!!

Re: My Lite DVD drive will only recognise DVD R discs

DH18A3P everything is in thai that comes up on a search the only english one lists it as dvdr+
i canot find that model listed in any of a dozen sites that carry liteon firmware or 3rd party firmware
have a look at the label on the actual drive to see if there is more information on the drive model

Thanks. You mean on the front of the drawer? It says DVD+R DL as well as DVD Multi Recorder. Yes I live in Bangkok but come from Perth - say hello to WA for me!

Re: My Lite DVD drive will only recognise DVD R discs

my wifes thai
try removing the upper and lower filters
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929461
try a different brand of disks, usually liteon's are the easiest to find help for that's why i prefer them

Re: My Lite DVD drive will only recognise DVD R discs

Thai wife.......guess thats why you have name Dai?

Tried to remove filters but cant see them:

[ATTACH]26323

Also tried the DevCon program to find filters but couldnt work out how to change the dir part??

Tried some different discs as suggested:

Locally bought DVD movies- yes will read
Locally bought music CD's- will not read
Princo CD-R's (previously burned this drive)- will not read
Princo CD-R's (previously burned by another PC)- will not read
Princo CD-R's (new, blank) - will not read
Angter CD-R's (previously burned this drive)- will not read
Neon CD-R's (previously burned this drive) - will not read
Monarch CD-R's (previously burned by another) - will not read
Princo CD-RW's (previously burned this drive)- will not read
Princo CD-RW's (new, blank) - will not read
Princo DVD-RW's (previously burned this drive)- yes will read
Princo DVD-R's (previously burned this drive)- yes will read
Princo DVD-R's (new, blank)- yes will read
Post Office CD-R's (new, blank)* - will not read
Imation DVD+RW's (new,blank)*- (will read & burn but not on player)

*these last two came from Oz.

Not a big choice of blanks in my area...everybody seems to use Princo.

I'm at your mercy

Re: My Lite DVD drive will only recognise DVD R discs

G'day Dai,
I have tried that firmware request site you suggested but they say my email address is banned??? Puzzling as I have never used that site before nor been banned from anywhere including my mother in law's. Have emailed them and await reply.

Lite-on support says there is no update for that model.

I have also put out feelers on other sites (CD freaks etc.)

I am not very computer literate so am puzzled as to why an update. Does it wear out or something?

thanks
Kim

Re: My Lite DVD drive will only recognise DVD R discs

the firmware update enables more brands of disks to be compliant
i've run into the email banning before,it will be the isp or the mail program you use not you personally
try another email account from a different source
it sounds like it was not a general release model from liteon, probably a oem with no support from liteon and the oem responsible
i think you will probably end up replaceing it

Ok, if thats the case I dont see how a firmware update would make a difference as it cant read CDR's that it had read/burnt previously.

This unit is less than 6 months old and still under warranty but I dont want to go slogging the PC around huge Bangkok and/or do without it for any length of time. I think it might be cheaper and easier to go to the local whizzbang shop and get them to replace the drive. Can you make any recommendations (I use CDR, CDRW, DVDR, DVDRW).

Before I do that, and after reading a lot of posts, I now wonder if it may be important to inform you that I have had a few other programmes (Nero 7 etc) in/uninstalled over the past months (lots of reasons). I just dont want to replace the drive unless I'm pretty sure the problem is in the drive and not the softwear/computer and thus have a repeat of the problem.

I miss Mrs Mac's giant sausage rolls'
Thanks so much for your help
Kim

Re: My Lite DVD drive will only recognise DVD R discs

searched sfc/scannow (and sfc /scannow as your quote) as per techspot procedure 29745 and search results showed no results.

Most of the stuff seems to talk about XP but I have Vista Ultimate O/S and Office 2000 proffessional.

No not changed cable yet.

Re: My Lite DVD drive will only recognise DVD R discs

This afternoon I found a systems diagnostics report in my download fiolder. Makes no mention of sfc/scannow but is this what you were asking for. It is too large for your reply post..how can I get it to you as you cant open my word attachments?

here is some of it.

Also did a virus scan (AVG) and shows "ntoskrnl. exe" with comment "change"..? Is this relevant?

regards
Kim

Re: My Lite DVD drive will only recognise DVD R discs

is pnp enabled in the bios
i don't know why i cannot open the document,i only installed office to read a document a few days ago which it did
normally i have no use for it so i don't know if it is
something wrong with the document
or something wrong with office setup
it says your video drivers are out of date.i don't think that bares any relation to the problem
see if they can point you to firmware here,or firmware to cross flash
