Portable device vanishing window
This is not a major problem, just an irritating one.
I have Windows XP home version with SP-2 on a Mesh 512Mb, 120 GB, with an Azus MB fitted in July 2006 when the following problem seemed to begin. When I insert a pen-drive or portable device, it auto-loads and a screen appears as it should, but then disappears off the screen after about 20 seconds. I can locate the device and its contents again easily enough in My Computer, but can't understand why the window disappears off the screen in the first place. When the Explorer window pops up, and if I'm quick enough, I can click onto the folders and access the files, which is fine, but if I leave the window on the screen, it invariably vanishes in about 20 seconds. Why should this happen? Does anyone know? It has been suggested that once any device is recognised, the window closes, but mine is the only PC where this seems to happen. I've tried deleting the Root Hubs and let them re-install, but still get the wierd disappearing act . If I start to do anything like copy to or from the drive, or any other operation while the window is up, then there is no problem as the drive stays open..it's only if I leave it alone that it disappears. I've run the Microsoft Autoplay Repair wizard and got the following results:- AutoFix [V5.2.3790.67] Time [2008-04-02 09:05:54] Microsoft Windows Version [5.1 (Service Pack 2) <2600>] Test [The Shell Hardware Detection service is running.] - Instance [N/A]: Result [AutoStart Setting]: OK Result [The Shell Hardware Detection service is running.]: OK Test [Policies] - Instance [G:\, Drive Type: 2]: Result [HKCU\...\Policies!NoDrives]: OK {Present} Result [HKCU\...\Policies!NoDriveAutorun]: OK {Absent} Result [HKCU\...\Policies!NoDriveTypeAutorun]: OK {Present} Result [HKLM\...\Policies!NoDrives]: OK {Absent} Result [HKLM\...\Policies!NoDriveAutorun]: OK {Absent} Result [HKLM\...\Policies!NoDriveTypeAutorun]: OK {Absent} Result [Driver level policies]: OK { HKLM\...\Services\!Autorun (Absent) <Allows> HKLM\...\Services\\Parameters!Autorun (Absent) <Allows> HKLM\System\CCS\Enum\...!AlwaysEnable (Absent) <Not set> HKLM\System\CCS\Enum\...!AlwaysDisable (Absent) <Not set> } Test [Drive Notification] - Instance [G:\, Drive Type: 2]: Result [Legacy Notification]: OK Result [AutoPlay V2 Notification]: Problems { Service (Silent) Shell (Deaf) } >> Repair << [Autoplay V2 Event] Step: No steps to take. Result: This AutoPlay setting cannot be fixed. Either the device is malfunctioning, or the wizard cannot determine the problem. >> Required action: The wizard found problems but cannot fix them -> NoneFitz New Member Posts: 2 Joined: Wed Apr 02, 2008 9:14 am Private messageE-mail Top |

Re: Portable device vanishing window
Yes I have those and have experimented with various settings in Autoplay.
I've been advised that it is not good security to allow pen-drives and other devices to automatically open files, and I can see the pooint of that, as levels of drive-infection through use of USB devices, are really high at the moment, but I'm just curious as to why the window only stays open for a short while then vanishes. |
