Cannot play audio cd's on external drive
Hi,
not sure if my problem is with drivers or hardware. I am using a Toshiba Satellite laptop bought in 2000, which is working fine except for the cd/dvd drive which has given up altogether. So I'm using a 'Rock' brand external cd/dvd drive instead. I've been able to play and create music cd's on this external drive before but when I tried to create a music cd tonight I'm not able to read it. I've since put in a bought cd and, for the first time, I can't read that either. I get the same error message. The first window that comes up has the label 'Roxio Digital Media Experience', then immediately the next window has the label 'Microsoft .NET Framework' with the words underneath 'An unhandled exception has occurred in a component in your application. Click Continue and application will ignore this error and attempt to Connie. Object reference not set to an instance of an object'. There is a ‘Details’ tab which I can click but it contains so much information - none of which is understandable to me - that I don’t want to overwhelm anyone reading this by including it here. When I tried to create two copies of the same music CD earlier with Nero, it didn't give me an error message for the first copy but it did halfway through the second copy. I just remember it saying something about 'x4...'. When I tried to play the first copy which hadn't brought up an error message, I couldn't play it. Instead I got the above error message from Roxio. Next I tried to use iTunes to create the same cd. Again, I got no error message from iTunes. It seemed to proceed right through ok but when I tried to play it, I got the same Roxio error message. It was after that that I got the idea to try and play a bought CD. This has never happened before. I've got the external drive plugged in using WiFi (?) because my laptop only has USB 1.0 capability otherwise. I'm still able to read and write data to my data dvd. Windows XP is still recognizing when I put in a cd or dvd - data or music - and I’m still able to use Roxio Creator Classic (from it’s Media Suite 9) to backup data to my data dvd. I just can’t play a music cd (and presumably a dvd film) The reason I haven’t tried to use Roxio Media Suite 9 itself to create the music CD is because whenever I have used it for that I’ve never been able to keep the songs in the order of the name I have given them and Roxio doesn’t give me the option to sort them my own way. (not that I’ve been able to find anyway. I’ve tried looking at Roxio’s own online forums but cannot find anything useful. I've just now been able to backup data to a dvd using Roxio's Creator Classic as usual while keeping the earlier Roxio error message on the screen. So data isn't a problem, only audio (and perhaps video - can't tell) I hope that someone can please help me with this. Thank you, whoa |

Re: Cannot play audio cd's on external drive
Welcome to TSF.
![]() Roxio causes a lot of trouble. See if there are any updates available for the program. Also - install available Windows updates. If that doesn't help >> uninstall Roxio. |
