Low vs High Speed burning? Quality different?

I saw many forum said that burning speed "lower is better...(2x, 4x)(for audio only?)". Does this concept works on all media types?

For example: I want to burn video CD. But I heard someone said the burning speed should be around 16X or higher for VCD.

Usually I will burn these 3 type media : audio(CD), video and games(DVD) (include ps1, ps2, pc games)

I'm very confuse on choosing burning speed on different type of media file. Can you provide me the exact solution for this problem....

i just leave it to the burning software to auto detect the burning speed
if you have problems with a burn then you drop the speed back,the slower the speed usually means a better burn
