DVD Burner won't read video DVD's anymore?

I'm experiencing a strange problem with my Toshiba DVD reader/CD reader-Burner.

It will read & burn any type of CD, and will also read data DVD's, but not video DVD's(that I purchased at WAL-MART).

Upon insertion of a video DVD only, the drive makes a loud humming sound and simply stops. The 'READ' light on the front of the drive flashes during the humming, and stays lit after the humming stops.

When I check the properties of the disk, it displays 'File system: Unknown'. My region is set to my country so I think that should be ok.

I use windows media player to watch retail DVD movies.

Is my burner dying? I've watched plenty of DVD movies on this thing in the past....

How old is your drive? I had the same problem when mine was about two years old.

Mine was purchased in 2005 I think.

edit:(Make that 2003. I think I may be overdue for a new one. I've upgraded my motherboard, CPU, and video card twice since purchasing it!)

That could be the answer I'm afraid.

If that doesn't work, before finally giving up you could try blowing out your drive with compressed air and using a lens cleaner.
