CD-ROM drive being selective :[

Seems like my CD-ROM drive only wants to play DVDs? Any game or music CDs and it whirs for a few seconds before giving up... I've tried different things, deleting upper and lowers, running different registry cleaners, setting default in BIOS, drivers are all up to date, i've disabled my virtual drives and everything... Any help would be much appreciated!

Lemme put up the log:

Re: CD-ROM drive being selective :[

check for a firmware update for the drive
clean the laser
are you using an 80 wire ide cable on the drive with the
blue,grey and black plugs
check the plugs are secure into the drives and the m/board

Re: CD-ROM drive being selective :[

Wow, thanks for the fast response

I hate sounding totally dumb, but I don't know if I am using a 80 wire ide cable (or even how to clean the laser). I only open my computer just to change RAM and occasionally switch the graphics card. Would it help if I took a picture? :/

Thanks for your time :D

Re: CD-ROM drive being selective :[

you tell by the colour of the plugs on the cable
blow it out with a can of air and use a cleaning disk or open it up and clean it manually
