Re: Computer restarts after displaying New hardware found Secondary IDE channel

did you set the jumpers up on the back of the drive and use an 80 wire ide cable with
blue grey and black plugs
the drive on the end plug is master
the drive to the middle plug is the slave

Re: Computer restarts after displaying New hardware found Secondary IDE channel

On your secondary IDE channel did you configure the DVD drive? If the CD-ROM drive is the master then the DVD-ROM drive should be a slave. Some manufacturers of mobos or drives don't like these designators and simply configuring both for CS (Case Select) cures the problem. If you are using CS on one then you should use CS on the other. If you're using CS on both drives and you are still experiencing reboot issues, try reconfiguring both drives as Master and Slave.

If none of this works, you may have a defective DVD-ROM drive. Try removing the CD-ROM drive and use the DVD-ROM drive exclusively and see if it boots up. If it fails to boot your drive is defective or the cable to that drive is defective. Move the drives to accept either the slave or master position on the IDE connector. If nothing changes you have a bad DVD-ROM drive.

Re: Computer restarts after displaying New hardware found Secondary IDE channel

HI,
THANKS FOR THE REPLY. but now i have disconnected all the external drives to my computer, just teh harddisk and floppy is connected nothing else. but still when my computer boots up it goes as far as teh desktop screen with all the icons and then this icon comes up saying new hardware found Secondary IDE channel and restarts again.
Even though there is nothing connected to it.
I think its a Win XP problem. i have posted my question there too.

Re: Computer restarts after displaying New hardware found Secondary IDE channel

Start out again by telling us what is on the IDE primary. List drive types (hard disk, cd, etc), brand names, how the jumpers are set, and where they are on the ribbon cable. Tell us the same about the Secondary channel. That should help us to know more about your rig and how it is set up.

Re: Computer restarts after displaying New hardware found Secondary IDE channel

ok here it is
Primary connected to Hard disk directly
Secondary connecetd to CD R/W but now disconnected.

the secondary is empty now.
But still afetr starting the computer is says secondary IDE channel detected.
I did a research and came to a conclusion that it could be the Win XP thats wrong.

Re: Computer restarts after displaying New hardware found Secondary IDE channel

What is the brand name of the hard drive on Primary? How are the jumpers set and where is it on the ribbon cable? On the hard drive, you are using an 80 connector cable, aren't you?

Connect the CDRom back up and set the jumpers to MASTER. Then, put it on the end of the ribbon cable.

Report back with what it does and says, then we can go from there.

Re: Computer restarts after displaying New hardware found Secondary IDE channel

Are you able to get in to Safe Mode? If so,then try a system restore befroe you changed things in case it is a software thing that has happened.

If you are not able to do that, then Clear the CMOS and see if that helps any.
