Help retrieve items from Maxtor backup

OK, this probably a real dumb question, but here goes. I have a maxtoe one touch back up storage that i used one time to back up a laptop which i no longer use. That laptop was a gateway with XP. Now i have an HP laptop with Vista, and i would like to connect the maxtor to the new laptop and put the data onto the new computer. Then from there id like to put all my songs in itunes which should be in there, as well as photos and an couple pdf and word files. Then id like to delete the rest of whats on that back up off the new computer, then do a back up of the new system. Why am i feeling like this is so overwhelming. Well, id love some help with this if anyone cares to take the time to explain to me,
