CD/DVD ROM not working
Hey there guys. I'm having a problem which started about one week ago. I have a Gateway CX210X Laptop. I'm having a problem where my cd/dvd drive is not being detected by the BIOS, neither is it listed under "My Computer" nor "Device Manager". I tried removing and re-inserting the drive to see if it was because it was not making good contact, but problem persists.
The drive open and closes, and the green light blinks, but still nothing. It actually makes a little bit of noise as if it wants to work or start up, but still nothing. I'm really confused and puzzled. Some help will be greatly appreciated. |

Re: CD/DVD ROM not working
It actually doesn't not sound dumb at all. But this drive doesn't have any pins in the back. Its hard to explain but the connection in the back of it can be compared to what the back of a SATA notebook hard drive looks like. Something similar.

Re: CD/DVD ROM not working
After your last reply I went ahead and tried reseting the BIOS. I was able to reset the BIOS (removing CMOS battery for about one minute), but still nothing. That didn't seem to help. I'm starting to think that its the drive itself that is no good.

Hi Techie19!!
Did you install any hardware recently, especially a week ago, before you having this issue? Maybe printer, or scanner, or any other devices?

Is your laptop still under warranty?

Re: CD/DVD ROM not working
This is very weird and puzzling. Today I went and turned on the laptop. Guess what, a little icon in the taskbar poped up saying "new hardware found", it found the CDRW/DVD rom and installed it.
So as of rite now, the drive is working and my pc recognizes it; both under "my computer" and under "device manager". I want to restart the laptop and enter the BIOS just to see if it's listed in the BIOS but im afraid that it will act up again. I'm crossing my fingers! |

Re: CD/DVD ROM not working
Shorty after posting my last comment, the CDRW/DVD Rom drive disappeared again from "my computer" and "device manager". I was going to reboot the notebook to see if the drive was listed on the BIOS, but before i was able to do so, as i said the drive was no longer there.
Any help would be greatly appreciated........................Im not sure if its the drive, the connection between mobo and drive, or WHAT? P L E A S E>>>>>>H E L P................................ |

Re: CD/DVD ROM not working
Hi Techie19
![]() Sorry for the late reply. Can I know you did use the laptop using the battery, or the power supply from the wall outlet? And how about the connection between the drive and laptop, trying to push the drive slighty into the laptop, see if the laptop detects the drive again

Re: CD/DVD ROM not working
I have tried using the laptop with both power supply and battery, just battery, just power supply and its all the same. Im thinking that it is something like the connection on the motherboard because it will recognize the drive at times, whenever it feels like it.
I also tried pushing the drive in all the way, but its as far as it will go, and still nothing. |

Re: CD/DVD ROM not working
It detects sometimes and not detecting it sometimes? Is it detecting at random or at startup of the laptop then disappears?

Re: CD/DVD ROM not working
It might be the port issue then. Try to unplug the drive, and use it on other laptop.
And try to use other cd drive on this laptop, see if both ways working fine, or something wrong happen. We can detect whether the laptop is having a problem or the drive is
