CDROM not showing up in My computer

I recently upgraded one of our Dell Optiplex GX270 machines to XP Pro. As a result the existing cdrom would not show up in my computer and there is a red X on it in device manager. I tried finding a driver and finally called Dell, they couldnt help me ( no support contract) anyway I finally gave up and bought an new internal DVD-CDRW drive - this one is doing the same thing - wont show up in my computer and has a red X in device manager. The system will pick it up if I remove it from device manager but then renders it unusable. The driver details say this device is not working maybe the driver is corrupt or not installed. So I gave up on this and brought an external DVD-CDRW and plugged it in USB and it found the device and rendered it unusable. I am guessing something from the upgrade to XP damaged the cdrom controller but not sure where to go to fix this. Can anyone help>?

Re: CDROM not showing up in My computer

Yes....I talked to Dell about a driver and they claim their isnt one. Besides that its doing the same thing on all three drives I have used. Do you think I should try to reinstall XP to repair corrupt files?
