Removable DVD drive, issues with new video card

Hey all, wondering if anyone can help. My buddy put a new AGP video card into his computer and now the computer is having troubles playing/reading anything off of his DVD drive, which is a Sony removeable drive (usb)

we've tried proper drivers, different usb ports, and now when we switch back to the old onboard video, the same problem is happening.

Tried hooking up his DVD drive to my computer, works fine, no issues.

He's running Windows XP on a Pentium 4 2.4 Gig cpu on an ABIT SG72 motherboard. The new videocard is an HIS Radeon ATI 2600 XT.

Sony drive is DRX-500ULX

I don't know if this is the right area, maybe this is more of a video problem. The error we get when trying to run say a movie is:

"Windows Media Player is currently unable to play DVD video. Try decreasing the number of colors displayed on your monitor or decreasing the screen resolution. For additional solutions, click More Information to access the DVD Troubleshooter."

We've tried reducing color quality and changing screen resolutions to no avail. Can anyone help?

Re: Removable DVD drive, issues with new video card

So, you have this issue after installing the new graphic card? And even after you remove the card, you still facing the same issue?

Try to do power reset, by turning down the computer forcibly. Then, boot into BIOS, set as default (usually button F5) and then try reboot into normal mode again.

Then, post also the status of the device in Device Manager, something like code 10,11 or etc

Re: Removable DVD drive, issues with new video card

tried powering down, couldn't find the status of the device as you asked, don't know exactly where i'm looking for it. If it's in the little box under properties on the device where it says "Device Status", it says that "This device is working properly"

Reseting defaults in BIOS yielded no result.

I will add to this that audio cds actually do work. anything on a dvd disc does not (movies, or a game such as battlefield 2142 specifically). I will also reiterate that everything works fine on this drive when I hooked it up to my compy (this whole situation is on my roommate's machine).

Re: Removable DVD drive, issues with new video card

further to this, i checked the registry where you had pointed out in that other thread and there are no filters (upper or lower) in there.

I uninstalled the dvd drive in my device manager, and then reconnected by searching for new hardware. did this a couple times without restarting between uninstall and reconnect, and did it once where i uninstalled it, unplugged it, restarted the computer, and then plugged it in. Every time when it finds it it says that it finds the Sony dvd drive, and then it says it finds a cd/rom drive as well, that may be nothing, but may be a clue, i don't know.

tried downloading drivers but it seems to be the same as what i have already i believe (this for the vid card).

You HAD earlier mentioned the power supply, and right on the box of this new vid card it says that it recommends a 450 W PS, the one my buddy has here is only 300. But it will play movies and his HD connection seems to be working fine, i'm using his t.v. to type this at this very moment. I believe between me and my other roommate we should be able to get one of our power supplys down here to try out, so I'll let you know what comes of that.

Keep on with the ideas, I can try as many as you throw my way.

Thanks!

Hi DLem!!

It seems like you have found the solutions for time being. Try to change the power supply, and see if that works

Re: Removable DVD drive, issues with new video card

Tried my 450 W Power Supply still the same issue. Back to the drawing board I guess. Anymore ideas? We could see if we could find a ps with a higher wattage but that puts us into the territory of spending money... yikes!

Seriously though, anymore ideas would be appreciated.

Re: Removable DVD drive, issues with new video card

Did you get any error message like "DVD codec" or something like that, or there is nothing showing up at all?

Re: Removable DVD drive, issues with new video card

nothing about codec, the error we get is when we try to play a movie in media player, and it's like the one i described before (can't remember if it was in this thread or the other). I'll add an update, my buddy went and borrowed an internal dvd drive from his work and it doesn't play the movies, but DID install Battlefield and plays that game. I'll ask him if it works through the external drive now, and see. The bright side is we've got him up and gaming again, the pressure's off to find a solution.

Glad to hear he's up to gaming again

This part is contains something very important:

Seems like it can read the disc, just can't play the DVD movies. Did you tried played the DVD on other computer yet? And what is the type of DVD, is it DVD-9?

Re: Removable DVD drive, issues with new video card

i don't know exactly what type of dvd it is. the thing is, the removeable drive USED to play this game when he had his old video card (which eventually crashed thus needing the new one). And it still does when connected to my compy. It's weird because it looks like it can read the discs (for example, when in my computer if we've got Fight Club in the removeable it will show up as G: Fight Club), just not play them. So I dunno. I'll have him try Battlefield on the removeable again and see if that works.

I'm still quite concerned about this being a mobo issue, and a friend told me he's had two of those same mobos that he's put into other computers crash on him recently. The fact that the sound card wouldn't work properly either really makes me want to point in that direction, but I don't know how to test really. It's not like we have a spare mobo around.
