[SOLVED] Not booting from disc..

here's my problem...I put ubuntu on vmware to see if I could use "linux". And I quite enjoyed it as I'm just fed up with Windows Vista. So I need Windows Vista for it's directX10 as I'm a gamer I just can't get rid of it. But linux would be perfect for everything else.

So I thought I could make a dual boot ubuntu & the vista I currently have. But my problem is, Ubuntu just won't boot up from disc, I have no idea why. Thought it could be something to do with hard drives, so I tried it with them disconnected 1 disconnected and lots of other combinations I got nothing different. All I got when I try to boot from disc is "boot failiure" the boot disk error.

It leave sme to believe it could be my Maxell CD-r. But ~I tried booting a few other disc(s) and got nothing. So only one thing for it could be my DVD-RW? the only thing what is weird the DVD-RW works perfect once booted, just won't boot from disc. So what could it be? I'm pretty sure it's the DVD but not 100% sure..

Specs
mobo: M2N-E SLI nforce500
Hard drives: 500 GB WD & boot drive is maxtor 250 GB 8mb cache 7200 RPM drive. both Hds are sata
DVD: NEC Optiarc AD-7170S-0B 18x (Sata)

thanks for suggestions in advance :)

I also figured this would be the right place in the forum, as I feel it's a DVD error.

did you go into bios to make sure your cd drive is first in the boot order?

Yep, of course. Tried it with hard drive as 2nd. and hard drive disabled and DVD just has the only option. With hard drive as 2nd. hard drive just booted, with it disabled got the disk boot error.

Re: Not booting from disc..

did you copy ubuntu to the cd or burn it as an iso image file? If done improperly it will not boot.

Burned the iso.

It seems that it's burned right. as when I use that drive to boot it up in vmware it all worked and installed correctly, just doesn't like to boot up from disc.

Re: Not booting from disc..

maybe its time for the drive itself to be cleaned. You can pickup a drive cleaner at most discount/electronic stores

Re: Not booting from disc..

Just posting it seems to be solved, at least for now. Just plugged in an older IDE drive and it booted.
