Help!!!

Somehow my computer messed up when restoring registry in xp to an earlier time and files from windows became missing. I added them from a ghost backup I made a few weeks ago but the cd drive has an exclamation mark in the system device manager. Even when I boot using cd as first in the bios it won't work. The CD tries to start but gets an error message. Something like unable to connect. Is this a software or hardware problem?? What to do?? I tried to get a boot disk from the SD card with info copied from the Ghost rescue disk but I can only get a dos startup and can't get ghost exe files to work. Any help is very much appreciated. There has to be a way to save this computer. Alan

Re: Help!!!

Did you use the troubleshooter? If so, how did it come out? (start, control panel, system, hardware, device manager, CDRom, click + to open, Right click, Properties, Troubleshoot).

Might be worth it to uninstall it again if the troubleshooter did not get it working, then shut down and unhook it from the computer (take the ribbon cable off), reboot without it in there, shut down, then hook it back up and retry it. Then, if you still get the error, then select scan for hardware changes and update drivers as suggested by dai.

Was this device disconnected from the computer at any time? If so, please explain.

Are you certain the ribbon cable is in tight on the back of the drive, some do come loose at times and make intermittent contact.

Re: Help!!!

tumbleweed: Sorry I didn't get back. I was able to find a fix online from a 2003 post. I had to delete some regkeys and my cd came back. I then reinstalled ghost and am only 2 weeks behind. I still don't have a software modem. This is how my problems started. I lost my software modem (agere). It intially had com3 but wasn't working working after loading (I think) bluetooth stacking software so I thought I would just uninstall and delete the modem for it to auto find itself again. No such luck. I downloaded the modem software with drivers from toshiba-used their delete program and reinstalled. Still no modem. I tried to add 56k standard modem but there were no com ports in the dialog box. I have a usb printer on com4 that works fine. Any help is greatly appreciated.
