CD/DVD drive problem

I'm having problems with my CD/DVD drive (not working).

I looked in (Device Manger; properties) and see "HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GSA-H20L This device is working properly" but, any application I use to write to the cd or dvd gives a message 'insert disk', 'wating for disk', etc.
I've tried different cd's and dvd's and always get the same errors.

On dos C:\>DIR E:
I get "The device is not ready".

The last time I used the drive was to copy a vhs tape to a dvd and lightscripe a lable on the disk.
I had no error messagaes at that time and everything worked fine.

Now, the lightscribe application 'Roxio' is working (printing label on disk) but writing data to the disk is not.

I'd buy a replacement drive but I'm not sure if the problem is hardware or something else.

Is there a way to trouble-shoot or test a drive before replacing it?
Thank you, Bob

Re: CD/DVD drive problem

I installed a drive out of an older machine. It Worked fine. Can anyone recommend a good cd/dvd drive? I'd like to get the best I can (if one is better than the others).
Thanks, Bob
