DVD problems, appears then disappears

Firstly hi everyone!

I am running a Microstar computer P4 2.66ghz 512 ram. My DvD drive in question i only know it is IDE DVD-Rom 16x came with computer. My problem is I installed a game using the dvd drive (battle for middle earth) it installed fine. Now i tried to load the game it freezes up my computer for a little while then says please insert the correct cd-rom, i have to task manager and end process to free everything up. Then when i look in my computer the drive has disappeared. I reboot my computer the drive is back temporarily, if i try and use it again it disappears. It says drivers are fine and device is working properly. I have used virtual drives in the past now uninstalled if this is also a possibility as i have read in other posts. Any advice or help would be much appreciated. many thanks and any other q's fire them at me!
