Confused Major CD/DVD Drive Issues - HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GSA-H21L

Hi all. I'm hoping someone can give me some advice. My CD/DVD burner is on the fritz. It used to work fine, but a couple of months ago I started having major issues with it. The drive is listed in the device manager as HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GSA-H21L. The computer is recognizing the drive, and it's listed in the device manager and shows that the "device is working properly". The drivers are up to date. I checked the cables, and everything is securely connected.

The drive used to read and burn CDs perfectly fine. Now I can almost never get it to recognize a blank disc (same media I used in the past when it worked fine), and it won't read most burned discs. It still seems to be able to read some purchasd discs. Last night after a couple of tries, I was able to get it to start burning an audio CD, but after a few songs, it failed, and I could hear the drive "struggling". It sounded like it was trying to burn the disc, but it was having serious issues.

Does this sound like a hardware issue to people, or is it possible that it's a software issue? If it sounds like it's most likely a hardware issue, I'd rather just be done with it and pick up a new drive (possibly external since I may need to get a laptop in the near future). I need the burner to burn some CDs for my mom. :-)

Help me, please!!!
