Help me restore my DVD drive

I installed a Phillips DVD+-RW 8801 in my Dell Optiplex at home. (I snatched it from another Dell we have at work)
I could never get the thing to work, and could find no support on Dells webpage.
After talking to some people they told me to do this and to do that. Nothing worked. I honestly couldnt tell you the numerous things I've tried...

My question- is there a way to restore this drive to make it work??
Its been flashed, I dont even know what that means, but I did what a friend told me to try... Can you corrupt a drive with software, or is it possible to reverse everything and fix it up?

As I said its a Phillips 8801 DVD burner. I'm running Windows XP Pro.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
