[SOLVED] CD/DVD drive restarts computer

Don't know if this is exactly the right section for this question, but...

My CD/DVD drive restarts the computer when importing cds, burning cds/dvds...basically when the CD/DVD is doing anything CPU intensive. Not every time, but a lot of the time, and without any definite pattern. I changed CD/DVD drive and then the memory and the problem persists.

The majority of opinions I've read elsewhere is that its either the CPU getting too hot or the power supply not being able to handle the load. I've been monitoring the CPU temp and it is well below the max listed on the manufacturers site (its an Athlon 64 3700+ and has been running no higher than 41-2 C). So, could it be the power supply? Is there any way to test the draw from the power supply? Mine is a 400w maximum Rosewill value series. I've got two internal HDDs and one external (although the external is relatively recent)

Would much appreciate the help

Re: CD/DVD drive restarts computer

I've only burned a couple things in a while, actually, and they've worked - .iso files burned with MagicDisk. The recent problems have all occurred when importing audio cds.

I did have issues with burning (also watching movies off of cds/dvds with a number of programs, and doing other heavy cd/dvd related tasks) a while ago when I first started noticing this problem. At that time I was mostly using nero to burn. I didn't think to do anyting about this specific problem because at the time my system had become infected with something awful and I eventually did a complete re-format/re-install. It was only after that I noticed the problem was still occuring and I figured it was a hardware issue; I replaced the memory, which according to the windows memory diagnostic, was error-prone, and when that didn't work, the actual cd/dvd drive, to no effect. I have also tried changing the power-cable configuration, replacing the cd/dvd drive data cable, using the other data port on the motherboard, none of which has worked.

Fortunately during none of this time have I had any other significant issues with the system as a whole. Its only this damn cd/dvd issue...

Re: CD/DVD drive restarts computer

Thanks - It actually turned out to be a power supply issue, and not a software one.

As I've learned, a bad PSU can cause pretty much anything to go wrong.

Actually, is there a moderator who can close this thread? I'm not sure how that works.
