[SOLVED] my dvd burner is sloooow. is she dead?
So my DVD burner (Sony DW-Q58A) that came in my dell laptop works like it always has for the last year...except at 1/10th the speed. DVDs used to burn in 8-10 minutes, now more like 2-2.5 hours. CDs take an extra 5-10 minutes or so. Its strange cause the drive still reads/writes fine, apparently. I've burned a couple DVDs and an audio CD since it "died", and they seem to be perfectly fine burns. Tried different media, different burning programs, all the same. DVDInfo is giving me a read speed of like 0.87x on DVDs. Also, my buffer is all over the place when burning with NERO 7 (the little "Buffer Level" at the bottom, not the "Used Read Buffer", that one is stays at/near 100%). And reading/writing discs kills my comp, i get mouse lag and any music or whatever gets all choppy until i stop the drive. I flashed the firmware (could only use the Dell firmware, and it's the same one it came with). I also cleared out a lot of my primary HD and defragged (which it seriously needed), but there's no improvement. It's as if the motor that drives the disc at high speed just died and i'm left with <1x.
Anyone have any ideas? Am i just S.O.L.? |

Re: my dvd burner is sloooow. is she dead?
i officially love you! hahaha! it seems to have worked, discs are spinning faster in DVDInfo and the lag is gone. Have yet to burn but it's looking good! It's a little strange tho because i've never gotten an error message, and my device manager was telling me it was set at Ultra DMA mode 5. It worked tho! thank you!
