[SOLVED] Replacing Optical Drive
My optical drives are rather old and i dont have a DVDRW and i saw one cheap so i decided to upgrade. In my computer i have only 2 power supply cables for optical drives and i already have 2 optical drives. I am thus going to remove my old CDRW.
I've opened the computer up, unscrewed the cdrw drive from the metal cabinet, am able to remove the data cable but i cant seem to pull out the power cable (IDE 4pin w/e that thing is) This must be trivial but i cant seem to remove any of the other power cables either (for my DVD drive and my Hardrive) and i cant to find a latch or anything that would set it free. I need help in removing the power cable... My motherboard is SIS 964 if that has anything to do with the wiring. Thanx in advance... |

Re: Replacing Optical Drive
I've taken the power plug out! but now my system doesn't seem to recognize both my original DVDROM and my new DVDRW.
i tried both my old cable and my new cable and i also switch the master and slaves around still to no avail. On the detecting IDE channels screen at start up it comes up with some mumbojumbo for the master and none for the slave. After i went into bios and did nothing, the computer detected my original DVDROM as the master and still nothing for the slave. In windows even my oiginal DVDROM doesn;t work anymore no matter whether it is slave or master. The power is working as they both open properley. Well i dont know what to do now... maybe my motheboard is too old? the model is mention above. Thanx for all you help! |

Re: Replacing Optical Drive
Oh yes the driver that is showing is a weird CDROM driver: RM8337Y XIC007O CdRom Device
This is for both slave and master. The Dvdrom is an ASUS DRW-1814BL Last edited by MaJezTiK; 10-05-2007 at 04:20 PM. |

Re: Replacing Optical Drive
Double check your jumpers. Master for your new one and slave with the old one. Put the master on the END of that new cable.

Re: Replacing Optical Drive
Refer to Dai's post ; Do you have an 80 wire cable attached? it will have a blue a gray and a black connector on it. The cable that came with your computer will be a 40 wire cable and a DVD writer will not work on it.
Put the DVD on the end of the cable and jumper it as Master and put the CD in the middle and jumper it as slave.

Re: Replacing Optical Drive
Yes i have the new cable and i have connected it the right way, but i'm not sure how to do the jumper thingy.. lol xD
*Edit Oh i've been looking around and i know that a jumper is a pin sort of thing... I believe that my old optical drives never had anything like this... but i'm not very sure.. There is no software way of doing this? Another thing is in bios setup it cant detect the slave and the name of the master drive it detects is weird. i suppose this has something to do with both the drives being masters? Look on the top or back of the drive how to set them up. You can not have two masters on one cable. You must have the master on the end of the cable and the slave (set the drive jumper that way) on the middle cable.
