500GB External HD Problems

I'm fairly certain the drive is gone, but it still turns on. It is an external USB chassis with a serial ata connection to the actual HD (Western Digital). I've tried everything I can think of including taking the drive out of the enclosure and attempting to access it directly with a serial ata adapter.

Here is what happens: Computer is on, hard drive is plugged in via USB. I turn on the hard drive and my computer detects a new USB device. When I browse "My computer" it shows the drive mapped as H: (which is what it should be). If i double click the H: drive, it shows me the root directory and all of the normal folders (Movies, Music, TV Shows, etc). Now, when I click ANY of those folders, the light on the HD enclosure turns red and the entire thing locks up. I've tried to CHKDSK from the msdos command prompt... same thing happens. I can browse to the H: root folder in command prompt but am unable to copy files/folders to my other hard drive without it locking up. Basically any form of reading on the drive that occurs past the root directory will cause it to lock up. Is my **** gone for good, or does anyone know a way I may be able to revive my drive? I am probably going to try the "put it in the freezer" idea tonight when I get home from work.

If you need anymore details please let me know. Any help or tip is appreciated!

Re: 500GB External HD Problems

Run the western digital diagnostic utility. If you dont have it go
to WD's website and download.
