CD Drives Don't Read

I recently upgraded my operating system from windows 98 to windows 2000(I know I am a little behind!). The computer is an ASUS P4. When I use the device trouble shooter it says my CD Drivers, a Liteon LTN485S and a TEAC CD-W54E and working properly. But, when a CD is placed in either driver nothing shows up on their icons. When I click on the icon it says, "please insert a disk into drive: E" and "please insert a disk into drive: F". There are no error messages or codes though. I've already attempted to delete the upper and lower filter registries. I was able to delete the upper filter but there was no lower filter. Now there are three additional folders under that section: 0000, 0001, and properties. Under the device trouble shooter there is one item with the question mark and exclamation point. It is the PCI Simple Communications Controller. Is this applicable to the problem I am having? Any direction on how to get started fixing this problem would be greatly appreciated!!!

Re: CD Drives Don't Read

the PCI Simple Communications Controller is probably your modem. if you do not use a fax or dial up, remove the card and from the device manager, otherwise find the driver for that card from driverguide. you might need to pull the card to read the version listed.

do you have new 80 wire ribbon cables in the machine? how are the roms pinned? master/slave/cable select? give us a diagram of the daisy chain from the computer.

Re: CD Drives Don't Read

The CD drives were working perfectly fine before and I haven't changed any of the settings. What I didn't do was reinstall the drivers because I can't seem to locate them for Win 2k. I read an article that one of the drives didn't need a driver installed. Is this true? Again, the drivers are Liteon CD Rom LTN485S and a TEAC CD W54E

Re: CD Drives Don't Read

the drivers are part of windows
if you set the bios to boot from cd first
pop in the cd and reboot does the install screen come up

Re: CD Drives Don't Read

I also read that one of these drives is an optical driver. Does that have any impact on the situation?

Re: CD Drives Don't Read

in the device manager uninstall the drives
reboot and windows will reinstall
if it does not fix
run a repair install

Re: CD Drives Don't Read

already tried uninstalling drivers. How do I run a repair install? When I try to trouble shoot the devices it says they are working properly.

Re: CD Drives Don't Read

boot the computer from the cd and choose install
ignore the first repair option and continue with install
when windows finds the previous installation
then do the repair
