DVD/CD not working
Hi folks -- the DVD (Samsung TS-H552B -- listed as "TSST corp" in my desktop seems to have gone on the blink. It was working previously, however, this is a shared family computer, so I'm not sure exactly when it ceased functioning or what might have precipitated it.
You put a disk in, it closes, the little green light flashes, and ....nothing. It's as if it doesn't recognize that there is a disc there. However driver says it is fine. Device Manager says it is fine. Seems to have the same issue whether the disc is blank or has data, and regardless of whether data is "Commercial" or user written -- also doesn't seem to matter whether audio or DVD. Occasionally I will get an error message "put disk in" -- but there's already a disk in. Redoing does nothing either. But I can hear the disk whirring away, so I don't think it's the actual mechanism that's failing. Any ideas? Stubbornly (since XP tells me otherwise) I think it must be a driver issue? There are multiple driver files when you look in device manager -- perhaps a conflict there? My delightful kiddies seem to have downloaded several different CD burner type programs, so of course, I'm sure it's all their fault -- but they say not... :-) Nero (one of the programs kids installed) says Firmware is GA04 if that helps at all? But under Disc says "No disc inserted" when there is one. Tried to run test an got an error message "medium not present -- tray closed" despite a CD being in the tray. This computer -- per Avast and Spybot is clean, and is otherwise functioning normally. Nuf Said? Thanks |

Re: DVD/CD not working
Not sure if when you say "data disc" you mean specifically a disc with "data" (as opposed to media, say) or just any disk with something on it.
The install disk I was trying as well as various media disks come up as "blank" when I try to access via Explorer or will generate the same "install disc" or "no disc found" messages. So for at least those two types of disc, going via My Computer etc does not circumvent the problem. Thanks |
