Exclamation Please Help! Maxtor Format Issue need Solution!

HELLO ALL

The following is my Info:
Dell OptiPlex GX270 (ROM: 120GB. RAM: 1GB)
Windows XP Professional. Version 2002. SP2.
HD: Maxtor OneTouch USB (200GB)

It worked fine for more than 2 years until recently the I/O device error and the many errors I got that were similar to this has happened to me. I took the advice of one which is to just right click the device (because I couldn't access it) and clicked format. since then I have got the following message:

**The disk in drive E is not formatted. Do you want to formate it now? Yes / No**

If I click Yes and I format:
**Windows was unable to complete the format**
**The disk in drive E cannot be formatted**

If I click No it wont open.

I can still see the device in My Computer but the previous message keeps showing. (but the device is now named Local Disk (E:)) and not the external hard drive name.

Although the Data in the Maxtor was quite precious to me, I took the liberty of trying to delete it so that I can make use of the hard drive that I have been used to keep my PC desktop clear and keep all the bunch of memory in the hard drive. The I/O device error thing that no longer comes out started when I filled out the memory and couldn't access it, but now I no longer have that error and have this formatting issue.

Just for the info, I used chkdsk before I formatted, it didn't work and I kept receiving error messages. After formatting, it tells me:

**The type of file system is RAW. CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives**

I am really desperate and have been looking for a solution for the past month. It will be grateful if someone has the solution.

Thank you all for your time. Awaiting your reply.

Regards,
Fanano

Re: Please Help! Maxtor Format Issue need Solution!

Go to maxtor and download a diagnostic tool and have it check the
drive out. This way you will know if the drive is good bad, or in the
best case needs to be formatted. If the response is indifferent, take
it out of the enclosure and hook it up as a slave via ide cable inside
your machine and see if it works. If it does that means the power
supply or the inards of the enclosure has failed.
