New iomega 500 GB Issue

Hey,

I'm new to techsupportforum.com and this is my 1st post.

Just bought a new 500 GB iomega Silver Series external USB HD. This is my second one (i have an 80GB too, which has served me well)

As soon as it came out of the box i formatted it to NTFS, which seemed to take a little longer than I thought it should have. Then I decided to run error checking with Windows.

The 1st error check i did using windows seemed to get stuck at phase 4 for ever (it didn't show any progress after 30 mins) so i cancelled it.

Then i decided to try my luck with Norton System Works 2007 Disc Doctor. When it tried to check free space (disk surface), it took hours!!! The HD got extremely hot during this time. Once it finally finished Disc Doctor didn't find any problems.

Reading and writing seems to be fine.

My question: Is it normal for a new USB HD of this size to take this long to scan and get that hot?

srry bout lengthy thread but any help would be greatly appreciated.
