How to capture video?

I got a video capture device, so I can transfer my home movie on VHS to my comp. Problem is that I can capture the video but not the audio!! With this device I have on one end there is a USB cable, and a audio out cable, and in the diagram it says it needs to go into the line in hole on my sound card. Well I don't have a sound card, just whatever came with my P5B-E mobo. and there is nother to tell me what is the line in hole on the back of my PC.

I have tried all of them while the video was in the process of captureing, but I got no sound from any of them.

On the other end of this capture device there are AV holes, and a composite plug. Had to by dual Av cables to hook this into my VHS player. Got the S-video and White audio plugged into the audio and video out holes respectivly on the back of my VHS player. There is no compsiste plug so don't have that plugged in.

It would be sweet if I got a reply really quick

Re: How to capture video?

The audio cable needs to be plugged into line in. Check your volume control to make sure this input is not muted.

Re: How to capture video?

First of all, make sure you have plugged your cables into the output jacks on the back of the VCR. I know, this sounds like stupid advice, but I've seen it happen several times. And make sure you are using the right type of wires. mini plugs don't work on RCA style jacks.

Terrister's suggestion the next thing I check when troubleshooting this type problem.

If your computer doesn't have a line-in, you will have to either add a sound card with line-in capability or change to a capture device with USB only output. I use a Dazzle 150, which has in and output capabilities. I've never used the output side and don't expect to ever need to. From what I've heard, the other Dazzle products work well, too.

Also, what software are you using? Some of them have audio input settings you have to make sure are not muted in order to capture sound. They have these features to make some editing/multi-tracking easier, but they can be confusing to folks who just want to copy home movies to DVD.

Re: How to capture video?

OK, here is the setup.

I have a Symphonic VCR with my home movie in that I want to transfer to the comp.

On the front of this VCR are a white and yellow AV plug. On the back is the plug where you can put the cable snake onto, and also 2 sets of white and yellow Av plugs. one says IN, the other says OUT.

A freind told me that the line in on my comp was a blue hole. Found it and put the line in thing into it. I went into the RECORDING DEVICES from the sound icon, and turned both line in's all the way up (they were muted) even though one of my line in said unavailbable, the other said it was workign properly. And both said highdef.

The DVD program I am using is the one that came with the USB DVD maker capture device which is called ULEAD DVD movie factory 4.0

After all this I still got no sound at all transfered. It transfers the video fine, but no sound.

Also what are mini plugs and RCA jacks? Are they the same thing as AV cables?

Re: How to capture video?

Mini's are the plugs used for light weight headphones. RCA is the type with a center pin and outer shield and is often also called audio. (Coax also has an inner pin and outer shield, but is usually much thicker and often has a threaded, screw-on connector.)

Based on the picture in your other thread, the Line-In wire on your device is a mini plug and the jacks on the other end are RCA style.

I haven't used ULEAD, so I don't know if there are settings in it you need to tweak.

Since there is only the one white jack, your VCR is monaural (not stereo). My next suggestion would normally be to make sure you have set the VCR to the correct output, but you're getting video, so that's probably not the problem.

If the computer and application settings are fine, there are only three other places where the problem could occur.

You mentioned that one of your two "Line-In" jacks was "unavailable." You can check the line in you are using by hooking up a tape or disk player to it and seeing if you get sound from that.

There could also be a problem with the audio out jack of your VCR. You can try using the other set of jacks and/or hooking your VCR to the input of another device and seeing if you can hear audio through that device.

Finally the audio line of your capture device may be defective. You can check this by hooking it up to the line-in of a tape recorder and seeing if that works.

Re: How to capture video?

I will look into those options you listed.

One other bit of info though, is when I go to the recording devices under windows sound, the line in that says unavailable say rear panel 3.5mm jack, and there is a dark blue jack icon.

The other line in that does say available syas rear panel analog jack, and it is a black jack icon.

Upon looking at the back of my comp, the mini plug holes are: Top 3: White, Black, Orange

Bottom 3: Pink, green, light blue

The bottom 3 hole have plugs in them (The capture device is plugged into light blue, and my speakers into the other 2)

Re: How to capture video?

Have you tried the jacks on the top row? As far as I know there is no standard for color coding mini jacks yet, so it could be one of those.

Since the icon for the available line-in is black, I'd try that one first.
