[SOLVED] Where is my DVD Drive?

Hi all,

I am sure in a cleansing of a virus from my lap top I did this to myself but I cannot seem to fix it. I have a Toshiba Satellite A15-S129. I cannot find my DVD drive...

It is listed on the Hardware list in my System/Hardware/Device Manager. It is a MATSHITA (panasonic) UJDA750 DVD/CDRW. When I go into 'My Computer' it is not listed and when I go into any drop down menu it is not listed. If I put in a data or music CD it will not play or open. How can I get my D:\ Drive back?

What I have done so far...

I thought I deleted the drivers or an important reg KEY for the drivers so figured I would re-install the drivers. Well, I can't use the CD that came with the lap top obviously. I tried to download drivers but I cannot find the drivers anywhere, not on panasonic's site, not on MATSHITA's site, no where... even checked DriverGuide.com, and they don't have it. I also did a Windows update because I read somewhere that there are no drivers for your standard DVD or CD player because microsoft has genric drivers that cover most DVD and CD players out there. As expected that was usless (but I could dl .net framework... yea!)

I tried to delete the drivers and uninstall the DVD rom. The 'add hardware' does find the DVD rom but then it says there is a problem installing the hardware it may not be working properly... well thank for the news flash!

I also though maybe it got disabled in the BIOS but when I try to hit F8 it is different with my laptop I only get restart options. I can't seem to get into the part that allows me to Disable/Enable hardware before startup.

Which brings me to another area where I my have made the mistake. I was shutting down things that were starting in msconfig that were not essential. I went back and checked and it does not appear that is the problem.

I know there is a way to create a new drive and assign the DVD to that drive... is that possible? Would that work? This I do not know how to do, so if that is a solution a walk through would be great.

Please help :(

Re: Where is my DVD Drive?

Hello,

Do you see it in Disk management? If so, have you tried Assigning it a drive letter?

Also, after Add New Hardware said there was a problem with it, does it list it in device manager with a yellow or red ! next to it?

Moving you to removable media.

Re: Where is my DVD Drive?

If it is not in disk management, you can't assign a drive letter yet. If you right click on it in device manager and select properties, what two digit code number does it list?

Re: Where is my DVD Drive?

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Re: Where is my DVD Drive?

Right click and select Update drivers. When the wizard appears, go through with all the default options and see if it finds a driver.

Re: Where is my DVD Drive?

It says it could not find a better match for my hardware... I had mentioned this in the original post too. The other issue is I cannot find drivers for this anywhere. Here is the type of media player:

MATSHITA (panasonic) UJDA750 DVD/CDRW

Re: Where is my DVD Drive?

Windows should already have a driver for it. I think it might be time for the system restore.
